pre-op and post -op coffee drinking

Recommended Posts

As far as liquids before and after your surgery, do you have an issues drinking coffee? I usually drink about 3 cups of caffeinated coffee a day with a sweetner such as sweet and low, no sugar. What has your doctors told you about coffee or tea, any issues with the caffeine?

Thanks.

Good Morning

i was told no caffene after surgery for 3 months until the risk of ulcers is significantly reduced! Also for every cup of cafinated coffee you need to drink a glass of Water b/c caffene is a diruretic..I got used to the Decaf pretty quick after surgery, now Im down to only like a half cup in the morning, it has kindof lost its appeal!!:(

I was allowed tea and coffee in a week or two after the operation and I've had no issues with either. I was a 2 or 3 cup a day person as well (in addition to the soda). I still have coffee every day (no soda) but its more like half the size of an espresso shot. I just don't feel like I need more. My energy levels are pretty good through the day so I don't need any "pick me ups".

My nut said no caffeine for 6 mos, because it's an appetite stimulant. My plan was to first break the caffeine addiction then move on to my Pre op diet which was breaking the carb addiction. I didn't want to tackle them at the same time! I'm glad I did it that way because each was hard.

My understanding is that caffeine will irritate your staple line and its also a diuretic. Since its apparently hard to get in enough fluids anyway, we don't want to do anything that's going to have the diuretic properties either.

I got served coffee when I was still in hospital post-op. I have a cup every morning. Coffee and tea are both fully allowed by my doctors and NUTs.

I stayed away from it for about a month as it was hard to get in all the Protein and Water but once I was getting that in I added Decaf and at about 6 weeks I started drinking regular and i've never looked back. I only put skim milk in it as I always have so it's not too bad and I havent had many ill effects occassionally it will cause reflux but that is rare.

I was allowed coffee from day 1 after surgery, I have to say for the first few months I didn't really fancy coffee that much, now I'm back to normal, 2 or 3 skinny lattes w splenda a day.

drinks with caffiene do NOT count towards your daily liquid intake. I had a cup of coffee in the morning before surgery and since surgery, I switched to Decaf. I figured why go back.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
