Dumping Syndrome with the Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I was curious to know how many Sleevers develope some form of Dumping? I noticed of the past couple weeks ( I'm 5 weeks post-op) whenever I have a small bit of sugar or small bit of fat ( I can only eat 1/4 cup at a time) I get colicky cramps going accross the lower part of my stomach, diarrhrea, fatigue, hot flashes and sometimes heart palpitations. It does'nt happen all the time just sometimes..

Thanks,

Yvette

I am not sure about this. I hear people say that they feel as if they get it, but not sure if it is really "dumping" or not.

My dr. and case mgr say that sleevers don't get dumping. So, I don't know.

Theoretically it's not meant to happen but I've seen some people saying they it sometimes does. Another term for dumping is Alimentary Hypoglycemia (you'll get plenty of hits if you Google it) and you don't have to have WLS to get it. I think I suffered from it occasionally pre-surgery when I visited the dessert cart too often on holiday (I'd get cramp and diarrhea about 30 minutes after dessert).

Yvette, the symptoms you describe, I get when I eat something to sweet or to fat too. Again it does not happen each time . I am almost 8 months out and I would say it has happen at least 4 times in the last few months. INTERESTING

Thanks Everyone,

I'm glad i'm not the only one that is happens to. Pre WLS .. If I ate too much chocolate / milk I would get the Dumping too. Maybe its just something that some people have a predisposition for. My Nutrionist said that some Sleevers will get this the same as Bypassers ..It's getting better though.. Not happening as much.

Yvette :)

I have problems with meals that are too rich as well... mostly starchy/fatty/sweet. most often times I can't even finish the meal before I'm running for the bathroom! (tmi..sorry). I figured it was a form of IBS. It definitely encourages me to not eat that stuff! I wonder if I'll still have this problem post VSG?

If you are eating healthy with little sugar, it could be that your stomach isn't used to it. It's happened to me and I haven't even had the surgery yet.

Have you talked to your surgeon? Could it be gallbladder issues? Do any of you take meds to prevent gallstones during your weight loss period?

That happened to me when I was a few months out - anytime I ate sugar, especially ice cream. Still happens sometimes, but really haven't figured out the trigger.

iegal, I had gallbladder removed before my sleeve surgery. I do'nt think that's the issue for me. It has gotten better as my stomach getting back used to foods in it. Now its the spicey foods that's giving problems. BBQ Sauce causes a lot of spasming pain in my sleeve. I plan to let them know at my next clinic visit.

You might be introducing things too early in your diet. I am having some issues, but it's my gallbladder. I have to have it out in about 2 weeks. My husband gets dumping syndrome as he had a rouxny. He is usually sick for about 20-30 minutes after eating the forbidden food. He gets very ill and ends up having to sleep it off for about 15 mins.

I do know that there have been a few cases of it with people who have had a sleeve, but it is rare.

Im sure i had it yesterday. I drank half of a Protein shot quickly. It was really sugary and syrupy. Pretty much straight away, i got funny pains, almost like period pains and i knew i needed the toilet. I had only just been about ahf an hour before. It was more solid than diarreah but felt just like it. sorry tmi!

After i had passed it i felt fine. No other symptoms apart from the pains and needing the toilet asap!

This is funny I have had this problem occasionally, the first time I experienced it. My Hubby had taken me to an all you can eat BBQ buffet ...I was so miserable... The funny part is I'm not sleeved yet ... And I only had one reasonable plate... (note to self stay away from sugary and fatty foods after youve been sleeved or you'll be sorry)

I notice several of you saying you have dumping symptoms and you haven't been sleeved yet. I know my date is very close and all the sudden I am having dumping symptoms, nausea, diarreha, cramping, weakness, I have to lay down. I really believe I am already have the dumping symptoms. Weird. I feel like I am being prepared so I don't eat certain things like sweets, fats, carbohydrates, Pasta, etc.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
