So I started my pre op diet...

Recommended Posts

I started my pre op diet today and I am struggling to find the right food. I have to be on a low carb/low fat diet for the next two weeks, the DR recommends 40-60g per day max for carbs. Does anyone know food that is filling and low carb that I could eat for the next two weeks? I find myself getting low fat food only to find out they have a ton of carbs... help!

- fish

- tuna

- eggs

- sliced turkey

- lowfat cheese - not fat free

- lowfat cottage cheese - not fat free

- celery with a little lowfat cream cheese

- green Beans

- whole wheat tortillas (check labels, some only have 2 - 4gm carbs)

- Atkins shakes (I love mocha latte and strawberry) - 2gm I think

- Some Soups are relatively low carb maybe ~10gm... I forget which brand, maybe Healthy Choice?

I suggest avoiding fat free because manufacturers add a lot of sugar to make up for the taste. Low fat is still pretty tasty and as a general rule will have less carbs than fat free.

Try to go to a GNC if you have one locally and get a Isopure 40gr protien drink. I do okay with the apple flavor - maybe like a jolly green rancher candy. Consider yourself lucky, my surgeon had me on a two week liquid diet preop.

This is all worth it! Love my sleeve and no regrets. Good luck!

Noel,

I started my pre-op diet yesterday and I have to be on a high Protein, low fat, low carb (no more than 30 gms) for the next 2 weeks so I know what you are going through. Personally, I think I have been going through carb withdrawal...feeling headachey and cranky but I am counting my blessings since some folks have to do a Liquid Protein diet for a week or two before surgery. I signed up for a free food tracker on myfitnesspal.com and that is VERY useful. You can put in any food and look at the nutritional info before you eat it....assuming you have access to a computer with an internet connection or a smart phone. They have free apps for IPhones and Blackberrys and maybe the android phones? Anyway, that is helping me.

I am eating and plan on eating lots of Protein in the form of grilled chicken breast, grilled salmon, tuna, eggs, deli turkey slices, etc. Green veggies such as green Beans, brocolli, brussel sprouts, leafy greens all have very low carbs. I really like the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand of protein mixes and I love the Atkins chocolate Splendor Protein Drink...it is like drinking chocolate syrup! :) Be careful with fruits as you can blow your entire carb budget quickly. I am pretty much assuming that all bread, starchy veggies and pastas are off my list for the next two weeks. It will be worth it though!

Thanks. I went out today and purchased all the food that you guys mentioned! I also had already ordered the Isopure drink which I got in the mail today. I really appreciate all the info you guys gave me, even if it was posted in the wrong forum.

Noel

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
