I wanted to update with what my doctors office told me... they said that it

would be a good idea to put plastic jewelry in and cover them with bandaids.

If it was a bellybutton piercing, I would def have to take it out. Thanks

for all the input! Seems like my piercings are safe for now! :D

Good post, I lost my nipple piercings to my Upper GI last week. I didn't think I would be waiting two hours for a pregnancy test. ;_; I guess for surgery I will be set.

I took mine out when I got really sick and was having x rays done all the time. I got tired of the nurses coming in and asking me all sneaky-like "didn't those hurt when you had them done?!" and I could only imagine the snickering going on when they were all standing around as the xrays came back.

There was no way that I was taking mine out (if I could help it), I just had them done back in December so I knew that if I took them out, they would prolly grow up. It was ok though, I put acrylic jewelry in and told all the nurses that I had them so there wouldn't be any problems. Most of them told me that they see them all the time, so it was nothing new to them. I was told to put bandaids over them so if they pulled anything over my chest during surgery, they wouldnt get caught. So it all worked out, but let me just say, those bandaids hurt like hell coming off.

Even if it it hurt it's good that everything worked out and you could keep your piercing!

I had surgery at UCLA and I had to take off all piercings because they used a new machine that uses electricity. It would be a good idea:$

OK girls... I'm an old foggy.... I know where the piercing is on the nipple but why?? I am not being snarky but truly want to know.. does it feel better during sex when they are tugged??? how about the piercings "down below" where exactly are they and doesn't it hurt during sex and anyother type activity that might rub that area? I am a horse rider and cannot even contimplate having a piercing down there? someone please explain the appeal.. I am truly asking for honest reasons I'm not judging or trying to be negative!!! I've always wondered!

I just had another surgery in Jan and they made me take out all the piercings I could remove due to electricity. I have one in the cartelidge(sp?) of my ear that won't come out that they just taped it down. My tongue closed with that stay so I am planning to get it repierces after this one.

And reply to Rhonda - I used to have my nipples pierced - I liked the way they looked and it made them more sensitive but my body rejected the piercings :(

Did you ever get an answer to this? I have both piercings you are asking about and could explain if you haven't.

Everytime I send a patient to surgery I tell them everything goes, if you weren't born with it then you can't take it in with you. With that said I took mine out and left then out for two days, because when they do the swallow study they should be out as well, and mine closed in that amount of time. So if I were you I'd see if they'll let you wear clear retainer barbells and put bandaids over them, if not just take them out right before you go in and put em right back in the moment you are with it enough when you get out. Our surgery consents have a "refusal of jewelry removal" area so you can sign and leave jewelry in if you want but you waive the hospitals liability if anything were to happen related to the jewelry. And I'd bet that if you have surgery outside the US they are less strict about that issue. Hopefully some of the above night help you out.

You can refuse to take them out. I refused for 2 different surgeries. Have then tape them and all will be fine. They only tell you to remove then for the sole purpose if you need to be shocked because ur heart stops, you can get burned from it. There is nothing they can do if you refuse. I even refused to take my wedding ring off. They just taped that too.

I had to take out my monroe piercing for my upper GI, I wasn't informed what the test would entailed so my piercing closed up and I had a retainer at home too. For my surgery I had to take out my industrial.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
