Do you still enjoy wine (or alchohol in general) after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

. Will have the sleeve in April. I've read that after the sleeve it is much easier to get drunk with little alchohol. Is that too? Do you lose the taste for wine? Should I not have any when I go out to dinner? Thanks

Well from reading posts I think your suppose to wait 3 to 6 months after sugery before having wine . Also red wines contain tannic acid and the ph is different so I would avoid red wines for a while.. Tiffkins I am taking this from a post that you made a long time ago.. I don't believe that this kills red wine forever. I am truely a avid red wine drinker and this would be a shot below the belt if I could never have it again.. I am probably waiting myself until around the 6 month mark I really don't want to cause any unforseen problems with my sleeve..

I drink pretty regularly, and have not lost my taste for anything other than extremely dry red wines which I used to love.

I drink mixed drinks with soda, shots, wines, and other stuff. The first time I drank, I did get drunk hard and fast off one glass of wine, I also sobered up pretty fast. But, today my tolerance is the same it was pre-op.

I was sleeved on December 30, 2010. I had my first drink on Jan. 30, 2011. I have on had white wine and I was fine. I have discovered that my tolerence is a lot lower than it used to be. It doesn't take but about 4-6 oz of wine and I am tipsy. I used to be a really big drinker. I was scared to death that I was going to gain some weight when I drank that glass of wine. I actually lost 2 pounds that weekend.

Hope it helps

Rae

I HATED red wine before surgery... partly because of the taste and partly because it always turned my stomach into boiling acid....yuck.

But now I've found one that is so good (Mogen David Concord) that it could be dangerous for me to keep in the house all the time! LOL... and I'm not sure if it's because of the sleeve directly, or because I'm so much smaller now and really don't drink much, but whereas before, sometimes I could drink all night and not feel much, it's definitely different now. I can feel one glass, and I'm buzzed after two. About a month ago I had four glasses while sitting in the living room with my hubby, watching a movie in my jammies, and wound up DRUNK, weaving and bobbing down the hall to go to bed.

So yes, it definitely affects me different now!

I have been really worried about the non-drinking aspects of this - particularly when combined with the fact that I just quit smoking too. I was sleeved on 1/26 and I asked the nurse at my Dr office about it last week. She told me that they generally recommend no alcohol. I'm convinced that this is because it contains sugar and is considered empty calories. However, she said if I wanted to try 1/2 glass to go ahead. I did indeed with no problems. A few days after that I had a business cocktail party to attend and drank 2 cranberry/vodka small drinks. No problems there either. I'm just glad to know that I can enjoy it in moderation if need be. I'm still losing, and have not hit a stall yet either.

I am waiting for these 3 months after surgery to be gone so that I can have a glass of wine. Any idea of how a life in Italy without wine is? White in summer, red in winter, that's my motto. Anyway, I do know how to match wine and food. I am just waiting. I promised myself I am never going to open bottles at home and drink them here without guests again, but it's a torture to go out and not being able to drink.

I am so ready for wine (and still have 7 weeks of sobriety in frontin front of me)! I am so going to tolerate it! Personally I am not worried about it! :D

I must have written it somewhere else, anyway when I told my friends I wouldn't be able to drink alcohol for a few months, they were like: "Ok, no alcohol. But wine is fine, right?". It isn't ignorance, it's just that wine belongs to meals as much as Water does!

I, at 13 months out, enjoy my rum and cokes every friday and saturday. . .I was given the go ahead at 3 months but with a warning of "do you really want to do that? It does add calories" Hey I'm human, I had this sleeve to loose the weight but not stop living my life. . . I have never really been a wine drinker and definately not a beer drinker, so I can't mention on those. . . but rum and cokes have not been a bother.

I haven't had any alcohol yet (I'm 4 months out), but I am not much of a drinker anyway, so it really hasn't been that hard.

Not sure how long I will wait, definitely 6 months, but I can honestly see waiting until the 1 year mark.

Hmm, I just thought about this this morning. I used to love my cocktails and tequila, probably more than most. Since the surgery, I just don't have it like that anymore. I believe I was drinking like I was eating - loving the taste of a nice Cosmo, Daiquiri, Margaritas.

We never bought mixes, always did our own sour mix etc. - damn you Alton Brown who introduced me to "hand-made" cocktails on Good Eats.

At least right now, I can take it or leave it...just like most foods. Now, admittedly, I am only 3.5 months out and my booziest months were summer months on the patio, in the hot tub, while having people over so that hasn't happened yet anyway since I was sleeved in November.

I used to be a wine drinker before I got my taste for cocktails, but it is the same with that. A glass is fine, I can have more, but there really is no "wanting" it like I used to.

I'm so glad you all addressed this issue. I'm getting sleeved on Monday and I'm a winotongue.gif. Wine is just a part of my life and i'm so afraid i would have to give it up forever.

I'm glad to see so many of you have added cocktails back into your life in moderation and are still losing.

My husband and I love to spend our summers around our pool sipping on wine. I swim like a fish and usually lose a few lbs during the summer months because of the added exercise.

I'm been on my liquid pre-op diet since Monday and I seriously just asked my husband if maybe "wine" could be considered one of my liquids. It's our 15 yr anniversary Monday (yes my surgery date) and I just feel like we should at least have a glass (or two) of wine together. cool.gif

I have to give my hubby a shout-out... 15 yrs ago I weighed 119 lbs (i'm 5'5") and over the years and 2 kids later I've ballooned up to 215 (age 47) and I truly feel he loves me every bit as much (if not more) than he did the day we said "I Do"

I'm SO GLAD I'm not the only one wanting some wine but I will wait....I'm only out 7 weeks and today I got this from my Prevention Mag email....Skip the second cocktail. When you have a drink, you burn less fat, and more slowly than usual, because the alcohol is used as fuel instead. Knocking back the equivalent of about two martinis can reduce your body's fat-burning ability by up to 73%.

After I read this I thought CRAP, no wonder I gained so much weight before my surgery. LOL Just thought I would share!

Im at 6 weeks. Last night I went to an art show opening. I was offered a champagne. I took it. I had a few small sips along with a couple of crackers...just for the taste, then left the rest on the counter when I left. No problem.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
