Hospital Bill!!! How freaking insane!!!!!

Recommended Posts

So I have Aetna and had my surgery on December 27th. I stayed for 2 nights. My deductible and co-insurance has already been paid up so both my surgeries (Sleeve and Tubal Ligation) were covered at 100%.

I was just on Aetna's website and you won't believe how much the hospital bill is???? Any guesses???? Just think, this is the hospital bill, not including either one of the surgeons bills!

DRUM ROLL PLEASE.......................

$94,429.45 now pick your jaw up off the ground!!!!

So, let's break down those charges, shall we??

Room-Board/Semi :$3,116.00

Drugs/Detail Cod :$1,131.34

OR Services :$17,052.55

Supply/Implants :$20,063.00

Pharmacy :$2,494.05

IV Solutions :$3,116.41

Sterile Supply :$3,847.00

Sterile Supply :$5,416.00

Sterile Supply :$24,485.00

Med-Sur Supply :$592.00

Anesthesia :$3,298.15

Recovery Room :$3,461.95

Laboratory :$45.10

Pathology Lab :$1,235.35

EKG/ECG :$471.45

DX X-Ray :$986.10

Lab/Urology :$105.65

Lab/Chemistry :$2,311.75

Lab/Immunology :$96.45

Lab/Demotology :$1,104.15

Seeing that the hospital alone charges this is absolutely freaking ridiculous!!!!!!! Now I know they won't get paid the full amount since this will all be discounted because of in-network prices, but come on!!!!!

Absolutely amazing, now when I had mine done (self pay) I paid $15,500. That included the hospital stay for 3 days, pharmacy, anesthesia, leak test and dye, meals, surgical supplies, EKG's, chest xrays, Iv sol'ns, sterile room, recovery room, etc etc etc, . . it ALSO included 1 year of follow up with the physician, support group at the hospital, all the counsel you needed.

Makes you wonder huh??????

I think they hick up those charges because they know that they will not get paid in full. Besides they just might find ONE sucker who will pay the entire thing and not think twice.

HOLY CRAP that doesn't even include the physician and anesthesiologist fees!

First, they don't get the full amount. It's discounted.

Second, do you have any idea what it costs to run a Hospital?

Of course they don't get all of that. The negotiated rates are much lower and also depend on the usual and customary amounts. What I think we all find so surprising is that if she had negotiated a self pay price and several people here have paid self pay in the United States.... it would have been 15k-25k.

hmmm i asked my hospital about self pay and i was told 20 grand for it and that was with a 5 day stay... i wonder if it got billed wrong?!?

Haha, that is amazing how much they up charge all of this. I know my insurance will pay 100% after I hit deductible, but I think if I see a bill like that for my surgery I might just start laughing hysterically.

It is expensive to run a hospital, but those fees are absolutely criminal IMO. I learned awhile back when I used to work for a larger hospital that the reason EVERY healthcare provider charges / BILLS for more than they know they will be paid is then it allows them to use it as a write off at the end of the year by Uncle Sam.

Hmmmm, makes me wish I could do stuff like that and reap those kind of tax benefits.;)

It's a game that is played between insurance companies and hospitals at the end of the day they will get less then half of that.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
