African American Sleevers

Recommended Posts

I am glad to see this forum discuss some of the similarities as well as some of the unique issues AA sleevers face. I am waiting for my approval from Aetna and hope to have surgery in the next four to six weeks. I was declined in September because Aetna said my file was incomplete and I had no comorbities other than a BMI of 50% ( go figure).

I had my sleeve placed this past Wednesday I came home Thursday. I started cramping and now I have something like a light cycle but I just had one on September 9th I did have intercourse on the 21st but thought nothing of it the test was negative the day of surgery. Did anyone else go through this. So could it just be the stress of the procedure?

Anyone's surgeon have a crazy sounding goal weight for them? I am scared that my surgeon will set mine at 110 or something crazy like that.. I am 5'2 but I plan on keeping some booty and breasts I do not want to be stick thin... I am thinking 135...

I'm 5'2 and my surgeons goal for me is 135 so you maybe in luck although I was thinking 145 or 150.

I think I would look fantastic at 145 but I know 135 is what it may take to make surgeon happy..

I'm currently 260, my pcp said he'd be happy with 175 but I wanna push for 145/135. The surgeon said that way when I get older it will be ok if I gain a little

Just discovered this thread. I had my surgery 9/21. I am still doing full liquids and can't wait for my post op appt next week. I have to wait until then to get something new added to my diet. Today has been tough emotionally as I am so freakin tired of broth and tired of the hubby driving me everywhere in my brand new car. I know he is just lovin it. Doc will not allow me to work from home or drive until I see him...rest walk n sip.

Congratulations to you. I can't until it is my turn. Did you have a lot of pain after the surgery? How long did you stay in the hospital after the surgery? That is my biggest concern, as I have previously had long stays in the hospital after a total knee replacement and then a life-threatening infection a year later.

Hey! I was sleeved on the 27th and I feel pretty good! I had some issues with my BP, but they increased my meds and I also had to come home with a pic line. The Protein was making me nauseous, but I figured I would try again today and my protien is making me feel a whole lot better! I had a few emotional moments where I was like Lord why did I do this, and he always made sure there was someone there in the hospital who had the surgery too to remind me why. I am pressing toward the mark, each day I notice I feel better. I have a couple of milestones, I was 480 at my pre-surgical testing appointment and then 453 on the day of surgery, then I was 458 yesterday, but I know that's because of all the fluids. Then because I had been so heavy and there was a lot of Fluid on my legs, they were very painful to touch, the pain is gone, and my legs actually look like legs now :D

It really depends on your situation and pain tolerance. I had surgery last Thursday and haven't had any pain medication since last Fri night. That just means that my pain has been tolerable and I wanted to get off pain meds ASAP so I can drive. I'm more sore than in pain and I move a certain way I do have more pain. Rest assured you'll be ok and the doctor will give you a RX for pain meds to help with the pain. Wishing you well this week and a healthy recovery.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
