Leak Test - Didn't get one

Recommended Posts

I had a leak test, and the dye they made me drink led to 12 hours of vomiting. I kind of wish they didn't haha.

I was kinda wrong... they did do some sort of leak test during surgery (checking for bubbles with the stomach submerged, or something like that), but not the post-surgical nastydrink thing.

I didn't get the leak test after surgery either, here in England they do it while your still under the effects of anesthesia

My surgeon also does it while you are under, as far as checking the staple line AND he also overstitches it as well. Nothing post surgery.

Humm gotta bring this one up to my surgeon too, I didn't have a leak test unless it was done while I was knocked out.

I will be sleeved on Monday. Dr told me he only does post op leak test if he thinks it is necessary. They also seem to be very very cautious with post op diet. Clear Liquids for 1-2 weeks then 2 weeks of full liquids. I was a little worried about not having one but after we spoke in length about the precaution taking during surgery I feel like he is right and not everyone needs to have a leak test after surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
