Please respond to Marie Claire about their fat-hating blogger

Recommended Posts

OK, I really have to rant here. I rarely feel the need to respond to pop culture, but I found this really infuriating. Marie Claire blogger, Maura Kelly wrote a blog about how fat people should not be shown kissing on TV because they are disgusting and she doesn't want to have to see them. Here's a quote from her article:

"I think I’d be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other … because I’d be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I’d find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair."

Worse, Marie Claire is supporting this blogger, saying: “Maura Kelly is a very provocative blogger,” adding, “She was an anorexic herself and this is a subject she feels very strongly about.” Kelly is also reportedly “excited and moved” by the 28,000 email responses they’ve received.

Here's a link to the whole disgusting, fat-hating article:

Please write her a letter and let her know this is unacceptable. Many of the comments note that if we exchanged the word "fat" for "black", "asian", or "gay", no one would put up with it. It's true. This article is shameful and filled with hate. No one should accept this garbage.

Absolutely. The worst part about fat-bigotry is the impotent rage I feel when it is perpetrated. It is fully ingrained in society that this bigotry is acceptable and those who perpetrate it are free from reproof. Because of the backing of formal medicine, people feel free to be raging fat-ists. Yeah well, in the 19th century doctors validated "phrenology" - the pseudo-science that "proved" that the shape of a black person's skull made them sub-intelligent and the shape of a caucasian person's skull made them more intelligent. They made all sorts of ludicrous claims, and claimed they had medical scientific facts to back them up. It's the same thing today; so called medical experts and average fat-ists, claiming the medical "proof" that fat people are unhealthy and/or stupid. I could not do a lot of physical things at my highest weight, but when I was chubby I was very active, very healthy.

I just feel so helpless in the face of this kind of poison.

I don't even know who this person is. . .therefore to me, she and anyone who "follows" her is nothing more than a wart on societies a$$. . . insignificant, none existing, a big plain old nothing. . in my book just a speck of dirt on the ground that needs no regard or attention. . . thanks!

Don't bother with a letter to MC. The more you go to their site the more hits they get the more advertisers they get. Go straight to who advertises with them and tell them that you will not purchase their products when they support hate bloggers.

Great point, and a great response! It seems like Marie Claire is working under the "no publicity is bad publicity" rule.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
