Gonna Pimp slap the person who invented protein powders

Recommended Posts

Judy, 4 weeks out already!! Just a thought, could you ease your milk craving with cheese and yoghurt/fraise?? That must count as real food!!

You are doing great, it's amazing the difference between surgeons regimes isn't it. Puts the requirements into perspective too.

Thanks Jane! Yes, I am going to try yogurt and fromage blanc type stuff.. I am pouring myself a teeny glass of milk just to 'scratch the itch', and not drinking any more than that once a day.

I am not craving milk as much now that I am on solids (chopped fine, and chewed to death), so maybe I am now getting whatever it is I thought I needed from milk...

Yes, the different regimes are interesting, as are the pre-op requirements. I did none of the milk drinking marathons, and my op was - apparently - classic. Very straightforward, and have had no pain to speak of, no vomiting (yet!)...

Well I've moved on to half-n-half, clears and fulls. I've quasi-solved the issues of the a$$ powders: russian goat yogurt. At 11g's of Protein and only 4 carbs for a 6 oz serving it is great on its own, because of the sharp sour strong taste I can't taste anything put into it. So that, plus some Tomato Soup, plus a scoop of "unflavored" protein and I've got a 14 oz drinkable with 39g's of protein and it's delish! There are many reasons why I can't wait for solids and among those reasons is the belief - I hope not a false one- that it will be easier to get to protein goal on a daily basis.

JudyM - Have you tried really really sharp flavored cheeses and yogurts to satisfy your craving? Some seriously stinky cheese or some goat yogurt might do the trick.

I'm confused...I drink already made Protein Shakes from Sam's Club/Costco and they taste pretty good. They have 30 grams of Protein in each shake. Are the already made type of shakes not acceptable? Do we have to drink the powder type protein after surgery??? help!!!

So, what is different in Europe? Would love to know. Everyone is so crazy being on the full liquids but this will be your greatest weight loss, as soon as I was on solid food everything really slowed down as far as weight loss. I was really constipated at first but have found a balance with more Fiber and doing better. Weight loss is slow but steady. I haven't been exercising much lately though, it is so hot. 106 today! ugh!!

Amen!! They are all gross, and I found out that unflavored just mean they aren't choc., vanilla or strawberry!!! :) I started trying to find something I like months before surgery and thank God I was buying from GNC, with a receipt, they'll allow you to bring it back, and I DID, four different times!! I gave up, I am drinking the GNC Protein bullets, 42 grams of Protein, Blue Raspberry is the least disgusting!! It really isn't bad, I'm ordering it on line, for some reason it is a 'new and improved'. :) It's only 3.4 oz and so I'm not sipping on it for HOURS!! I take a few sips in the morning, then again at noon and then finish it up in the evening and I'm done. With that and the food I'm now eating (I'm nine weeks out), I get in 65 - 90 grams a day!! Good luck....it gets easier....and now I just focus on drinking, my drink of choice is Decaf iced tea. I start and end my days with 8 oz of skim milk!!

This crap is DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I am 5 days out from surgery and have been living off protein powders blended with Water and whoever invented this crap was an a$$h013. I choke down 80g's worth of protein every day and try to keep up with the Water but I feel like I am being punished for every pleasure I've ever had from food. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! I need real food with real flavor, not this gritty paste water that tastes of a$$. I don't mind that I'm on liquids, but anything but this!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHH.

PS - yes, I've tried a variety of the brands, all a$$. And I'm only getting in about 300 cals a day, the doc wants me at 600.

No, ready to drink are fine, just so the calories and sugar aren't high. I drink the Atkins some times, they were recommended by my dietitian. I know a lot of people talk about the RTD shakes from costco. The powders are YUCKY!!

I'm starting to feel like a vampire, albeit a fat out of shape one - no human bodily functions and restricted to a liquid diet without any interest in human food. =( I never thought I would miss a good poo, but I do, I miss poo. ing.

The best thing I ever ate when on liquids only post op was homemade chili, then drained everything out and just drank the liquid and it tasted SO good! It was so nice to have the spicy taste after all of that crappy chocolate Protein drink!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
