Fun thread: foreign languages

Recommended Posts

I just thought it would be fun to know how many people speak more than one language. The only foreign languages I know are programming ones, but I really want to learn German.

I'm guessing that K@t is fluent in Portugese, and I know that we have several folks who speak Spanish like a native. We have Keerbara, but I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know what is the official language of Saudi, Farsi, I'm gonna guess... (don't know if I spelled Farsi right though)

Anyone else?

Well I don't speak a second language. But my 15 y/o taught herself ELVISH off the TLOR movie and books. Now that is a useful skill. Kinda of like Klingon on Star Trek.

OK Let's define foreign language? LOL!!!

Because I was born and raised in the SOUTH people assume I speak a foreign language. Especially if they are from the NORTH. Hence John my s/o. LOL!!

"git to church on sunday marning er God is gonna git ya."

That was my grandmother's mantra growing up. I learnt that early on. I have been on the WEst Coast too long cause now I am integrated into this mecca of all manor of languages out here.

Farsi is the Saudia language and you spelled it right. I have a friend married to an Iranian and she speaks fluent Farsi. She even spoke some curse words in Farsi but I can't remember them now.

Here is another weird word from my southern grandmother. "HOPE" sounds simple right? Here is how she used it in a sentence. "I need some hope over here chillins". Can you guess what she meant?

I speak Swedish fluently but with a terrible accent, French semi-fluently, and a little Greek.

My husband is from Sweden & learning the language made our visits a lot easier. I learned mostly through immersion (I spent several months there at a time) or studying the dictionary, trying to communicate with the in-laws, etc. I studied French for 7 years in highschool/college, but it's fading fast. My family is Greek and I learned it too through immersion - I've never studied it.

This is my one desire....

to learn a second language.

Telly, my mouth dropped when I read the languages you can speak. How impressive!!!!

Im like Penni - I struggle with just ONE, much less 2, 3 or 4 others!

I would love to learn French. My grandmother spoke only French (cajun French though) till she was in her mid 20's - then learned English. She was simple woman - no education.

My guess is that if SHE could learn a second language, then I should be able to.

Sweet Baby (my 6'5" adorable husband) was stationed in Germany for a couple yrs in his first life ( the army), but swore to me that he didn't learn much German. A year or so ago we spent a week in Italy and the more Italian he heard the more German he spoke in response! Go figure!

I, on the other hand was raised in North East Texas, therefore I speak "Bubba" ( also known as redneck) as a second langauge.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
