Food quantity

Recommended Posts

I was told, when I started regular foods, to only eat 2 oz of dense foods (meats) and up to 4 oz if it is softer foods (cottage cheese) at a meal.

They used a 32 french bougie, so my stomach is only 2 oz. It will stretch to a max of 4 oz, but I am to never to eat over 4 oz or a 1/2 cup.

AND, wait 45 min before drinking fluids again.

So combining all of your category (Protein, veggie, carb...) you will eat 4oz total in one meal?

yes, anything over that causes a lot of pain. And, sometimes it comes up through the esophagus, they call it *foaming* I believe. It has only happened to me once, but it was horrible, so glad I was at home at the time.

You should eat no more than what your sleeve holds. :svengo: This is another thing that varies. Some people's stomach don't get as swollen and they are eating 3-4 oz. right away while others are struggling to eat 0.5-1 oz. But eventually the swelling goes down and you can eat more, plus there is some slight relaxing of the tissues.

Once you are a year out, a lot of people can eat 4-6 oz. of food and some can eat 6-8 oz. It really depends on what the food is though. Plus how fast you eat and how well you chew.

Does anyone actually have a food scale and weighs their food before eating? I just eyeball my portion then eat what I can, which is usually not all of what I put on my plate.

I do have a food scale; however, I never weigh my food before eating -- I eyeball it too -- getting better at getting the portion sizes right - but like you, generally just eat until I'm comfortably full.

I have one and use it often but not EVERY time.

I never weigh my portions. I eyeball everything as well, and have gotten pretty good at it. I figured that the quantities I am supposed to eat are based on volume and not actual weight of the food.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
