Pre-op liquid diet -- not required by surgeon but thinking I want to do it anyway

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

My surgeon doesn't require a pre-op liquid diet. I asked him if he wanted me to lose weight before my surgery and he said just not to gain any.

I'd like to lose about 15 lbs before surgery and shrink my liver (just in case). I was thinking of doing a liquid diet before the surgery. Can those who did a liquid diet tell me:

  1. Did you do it for 2 or 3 weeks?
  2. What shakes did you use?
  3. How many grams of Protein would I be shooting for? How many grams of carbs should I limit myself to?

Many thanks!

What type of post-op diet does your surgeon have you do? Is it 2 weeks of liquids? If so, trust me, you'll be SICK SICK SICK of liquids by the time you get to move to mushies if you do 2 weeks liquid diet pre-op too ... you may not think so at this time, but trust me, one week or so into it you're going to be so sick of liquid you would rather not eat.

A low carb/high Protein diet will also shrink your liver and you actually get to eat - if you watch what you eat and keep your calories lower you should be able to lose weight before the surgery.

Keep in mind, this is my opinion only and others may disagree.

1. For approximately 2 weeks- all he required was 4 days though

2. I didnt do shakes, I drank isopure- has 40 grams of Protein in it bought it at GNC. No carbs, 160 calories

3. I shot for 80-90 grams of protein per day. I limited my carbs to less than 30 per day

Hope this helps. Although, I must point out, you dont really have to do shakes or liquids to shrink your liver. You can do high protein, low carb and low fat ---kinda like Atkins diet to shrink your liver as well. The main thing is limiting sugar/carbs.

Thanks so much for the replies. I will look into the Isopure, I've read about that before. I can definitely work with a high protein/low carb diet, I'll do some looking online for some ideas. I'm thinking eggs, greek yogurt, grilled chicken and salad, etc.

Thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't do it, if it's not required. The liquid pre-op diet can be tough and then you have to do liquids post-op for at least two weeks. If you want to lose weight, a low carb diet with real food will shrink your liver just as well as a liquid low carb diet.

i thought the liver shrinking was for a fatty liver so i would have thought low fat, so is it low fat and low carb? low carb low sugar? i'm a little confused, i have to do my 2 week but just found out friday that i have a date on 5/28 so not even 2 weeks now,

I am on day 11 of a 14 day liquid diet. My surgery is Wednesday the 19th, can't wait. I was told I could have up to 4 Protein Shakes a day I use a pre made kind called premier it has 30 grams of Protein. Unlimited sugar free Snapple, sugar Free Jello, and fat free broth. Anyway I am so sick of Protein Shake that I have stop drinking them I stop eating Jello and I don't like the broth from the can so I am not drinking that. It is the hardest thing I have ever done.

Well my surgeon do require a 2 week High Protein/Low Carb diet, she also says that I could eat very small amounts of meat as long as it?s blended very well. I?m on the 7 day of my 2 weeks and I?ll be getting sleeved on the 24th of May. I also drink about 60 grams of Protein Shakes a day. I love the Akins (Vanilla , chocolate and Strawberry) and they only have 1 gram of carbs.:001_tongue:

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
