swimming post-op?

Recommended Posts

I think that it just indicates that you aren't carrying as much fat in your legs as elsewhere in your body, since the fat provides extra bouyancy. My wife was somewhat dismayed after losing so much weight after her WLS that she had to work harder to stay afloat! So, this will change as you lose weight, and everything will sink more evenly.

Legs dropping is typically a sign of trying to keep your head too high. Try pressing your shoulders down. It also indicates a slow pace, picking up the pace of both the stroke and kick might help If you're like me and having problems breathing then get a snorkel.

I swim 1 1/2 mile 5 or 6 days a week and I too find it's the only excercise I really enjoy. And as others have said as long as your incisions are healed well and you're up to it go for it. You'll get winded pret ty fast but just keep moving and you'll build up your strength in a few weeks.

To add to what Rootman says....make sure that when you are swimming, you look straight down at the bottom of the pool. Many people new to swimming have a tendency to want to look up when taking breathes instead of tilting the head just slightly to the sides. Just practice, practice, practice. clap2.gif Lastly, strengthening your core will help with sinking legs too!!!

thanx to all about the swimming facts - i never would have thought to put my head down, look straight down at the pool, shoulders down - tell me, would it be a good idea to hold on to the side of the pool and kick? with all the advice you gave - or that doesn't really work? kindof like a practice to the swimming?

thanx kathy

thanx fellow swimmers for your comments about legs staying afloat

if i were to hold on to the side/edge of the pool kicking/practicing would that help with my sinking legs problem

thanx kathy

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
