Anyone sorry they had the VSG surgery?

Recommended Posts

Wow! This is the first time I've heard of people who REGRET the sleeve surgery. I have suffered from depression and bipolar disorder since high school. I've been concerned that I may have a really hard time coping after surgery. Also, I get urppy a lot, which is one reason I didn't pick the band because the mere THOUGHT of having a foreign thing in me made me nauseated all on its own.

What if this surgery ruins my life? What if it creates a life of wooziness and being sick or uncomfortable. Wasa? Elisabeth? Anyone? Do you have some advice?

Thanks,

Rose

Sleeve surgery date- 8/7/2009

You know, I really don't bother with regrets. In March, 2006, I got the band and it turned out to be a disaster in terms of my quality of life. However, I went into that surgery excited that I finally found a tool that would help be lose, and keep off, weight. While I never achieved restriction, I did force myself to keep working to try and make the band work. Through diet and exercise alone, I lost 70 pounds. The band failed me so I have no regrets of something I had no control over.

VSG surgery was something I looked into and researched for a year prior to me having the procedure. The RN in me looked into the anatomical parts of the procedure and the food addict in me examined the type of eater I am. I eat too much good food. I bake cakes, Cookies, etc., all the time and have no desire to eat them. The same is true for ice-cream and potato chips, etc. I LOVE bread. Give me a loaf of hot crusty bread and butter and I am in heaven. LOL. For that reason, bread is not in my house. Out of house, out of my belly!

I know malabsorptive procedures are not for me. I needed a restrictive procedure that worked. The band didn't work for me but it does for others. When I took the first sip of Water post-op from VSG, I knew I got a procedure that could work for me. "Could" is an important word because all surgeries could work or they could fail. I am working to do my part because the VSG definitely did its part. Some people lose 20-30 pounds in a month. I lost 25 in 2 months. Regrets? No! I'm no longer 30 or 40 years old and I'm having 2 knees replaced in Sept. I know I am eating right and exercising with a personal trainer to the best of my ability so what do I have to regret? My goal is to get to a healthy weight and, as long as I get there, I'm happy with the scale showing a consistent downward trend.

Comparisons to others is not a good thing and looking back and regretting is pointless. You can't change history but you can learn from it. So, I learned from the band surgery and am loving the sleeve but it's a learning experience. I do know, I have no regrets.

That's a great way to explain it Elisabeth and so very true. I never had the band; however, I intend to make the sleeve work for me and as long as the scale keeps going down, I will be happy. I, too, am no longer young and if I can lose 2-3 lbs a week, I will be very happy with that loss.

I don't have bread in my house either for the exact same reason ... given my choice between sweets and hot bread with butter I'll choose the bread and butter every time...especially if it's warm sourdough bread.

I also prefer fruits over sweets, especially strawberries, bananas and watermelon - however, bananas have a ton of carbs and watermelon has a high glycemic count ... so even eating "healthy" too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing, if that makes sense.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
