My pathetic two year anniversary story

Recommended Posts

It's now been two years since I had the lapband surgery done. For a year and a 1/2 i struggled with eating. I was throwing up almost on a daily basis. After a total and complete meltdown I finally decided 6 months ago to have all the Fluid removed and now i'm just saving my money to have the lapband taken out.

I wish I had a success story, but this simply didn't work for me.

Thank you for sharing another side. Not everyone's body can support a Lap Band, mine included.

I found the removal easier than the implant. I hope you can have the removal done soon! Hang in there!

Thanks. I know many people successful with it and I encourage those who have it to continue on with their weight loss!!

Thank you for your honesty about your experience. I'm sorry that your journey on that road didn't work out for you. It is indeed a cliche but "One size doesn't always fit all"....I pray that you find your way out of what sent you to the lapband in the first place. And that you are blessed beyond measure....

I am sorry to read your post. Did you ever find out the reasons for having so many difficulties with eating?

Success with a band means "having your head in the game", and sometimes the psychology part is more difficult than the physiological aspects of band life.

Having your band emptied of all fluid does not necessarily mean the end of your journey. I have had my band empty for 4 months now, and I have been able to continue to lose weight. Not at the pace I did earlier, but I am approaching my goal weight now.

Perhaps if you continued to follow the eating rules, and made a commitment to exercise you can still be a success story. I know that the only way I will reach my goal weight is with continuing to exercise.

The band is a highly self empowering tool...you can still be the success you wanted to be.

Best wishes with whatever path you choose...

Here's my band story:

I started at 235. During my 6 months of nutrition counseling prior to approval of getting the band I got down to 215. That's not uncommon for me. I've been able to lose 40 pounds quite easily, only to gain it back and more every time.

The day of band surgery I was 215. 5 days after band surgery I was 203. drinking only liquids will do that to you. :)

Then through the course of 12 months with the band it was a lot of trial and error. for the most part I kept getting fills. Still felt hungry, albiet I didn't seem to have the cravings for food I used to have. But then one time I got a fill and I threw everything up. Went back right away and had a little taken out. From there it seemed to really mess me up. some days I could eat nothing, some days I could eat everything. But what frustrated me the most was that I couldn't eat the foods that I believed were necessary for me to be healthy. I couldn't eat salad, chicken or eggs. At that was at all levels of Fluid in the band. I'd feel like I was chewing until my food was oblivion and yet something would get stuck. And for me, every time something got stuck, it was a violent 30 minutes of throwing up. I didn't even know my body could produce that much saliva but it did. It would happen everywhere. I became a recluse. I couldn't go out anywhere and eat because it would get stuck. I did get down to 180 pounds but it was a miserable, violent way to get there. I was DONE throwing up. So then I started reverting to foods that I wouldn't throw up with, like mashed potatoes and lots of them. Once I was back to 205 pounds I called it quits. I went and had the fluid out and i've been better ever since. I'm down to 190 now. And i'm happy that I am not throwing up and can eat chicken, salads and eggs.

I'm very sorry you've had so many struggles.

It sounds like your band was too tight for a long time. Everything you describe are classic symptoms of a band too tight.

Have you considered trying to use your band without it being too tight?

i agree...why dont you try having some Fluid taken out...classic symptoms of being too tight, maybe you wouldnt necessarily have to have it taken out ??

My dr say...you should never ever throw up when eating, never get stuck and never ever Not be able to get liquid down...if you have any of these frequently...you are too tight....just a thought for you

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
