Problem-Need Advice ASAP

My wife had lap band surgery in June. She has lost 70+ pounds as of Sep 8. For the last 2 weeks she has not been able to keep anything down except liquids. She had a esophagram last week. The barium was not able to pass through the band except for a few drops. The doctor conducting the test said he thought the band was too tight. She told them she has not had a fill done yet. This is true. She hasn't had even one fill. The band has not slipped. Her surgeon said that perhaps the band is too small for her stomach, however he wants her to wait a month to see if the band will loosen as she loses more weight. I don't think she can't wait that long. If band was going to loosen as she lost weight wouldn't her situation be improving? She has lost 70 pounds already. I am concerned that her surgeon is looking out for his best interest over my wife's. Of course she doesn't want to do the surgery again to replace the smaller band with a larger band, but that is the only option her dr has proposed if her situation doesn't improve. Please share your advice if any have had similar experience.

go back to the lap band doctor and have them look at your wife TODAY

not being able to swallow anything but liquids is dangerous and not how the lap band works (fill or no fills)

do not take no or nothing wrong as the answer as obviously something is.

You and your wife have valid concerns and something needs to be done ASAP. Of course your surgeon can list your wife as a huge success in his books, but your wife's weight lost is not healthy and is very dangerous as she can eventually end up with Vitamin deficiencies from starvation and other complications.

She has lost weight very rapidly, and it is not in a good way, she is probably vomiting all her meals.

There are many people get the band either too small or too large for their anatomies, usually surgeons are good at identifying which band should fit the patients stomach during surgery, and they usually have the small and large band available to fit the patient based on the stomach size when they get in there.

I've seen MANY over the years suffer from horrible band slippage, frequent vomiting, food intolerance and esophageal damage due to bands too small, and all ended up getting the band removed.

If she can get it removed immediately and replaced with a larger band, she can probably prevent any further damage to her body.

I would personally find another surgeon to remove the band, and get an attorney, and if your wife wants to get another band placed 'correctly' in the future, she probably will have better banded life than she does now.

Ideally a well fitted lap band should allow lots of wiggle room with an empty band, most patients have NO restriction with an empty band and it feel like there is no band, that is how it should be ideally, and with a band that is optimally filled, it should take about 3-7 fills to fill optimally.

When someone gets fully restricted on very little saline, this means their band is almost too small and if anything happens, they are likely to suffer complications too.

Good luck

I call bullshit. Call your surgeon and say, no let's not wait a month. You are absolutely right, if she's lost 70 lbs in a mere 3 months and is only sustaining herself through liquids than she is setting herself up for some severe complications. 70 lbs is a sufficient test for the band to losen, it didn't. Is she able to get at least Protein shakes down?

This is precisely the kind of crap you don't gamble with. Next thing you know she'll be so dehyrated and depleted you'll see her in cardiac arrest or kidney failure.

Sounds like doc got it wrong and it's time for him to repair the damage done!

I agree with the ladies above me. She doesn't have a month to wait, this has to be taken care of immediately. You can't take that big of a gamble with her health. I would find another bariatric surgeon immediately because it's clear her current surgeon doesn't have her best interest at heart.

May I ask where she had her surgery and what size band she has?

If it's between life and weight she needs to get well first before something worse happens. She can always get the banding again. But this is life threatening she should think of it that way. What does the lapband dr say. Or was it a lapband dr that said wait? This is only my opinion but this is scary stuff. Don't let her become a satistic. God Bless and prayers coming your way...let us know how she is doing.

I agree with everyone. You need to get her butt to her Band surgeon's office ASAP. Don't wait for a week, go tomorrow,(unless its not to late today)! THIS IS LIFE THREATENING if she can't eat or drink. Best wishes. As stated by others 70 lbs since June is way too much. Karen

I just spoke to the Lap Band Surgeon. He is now suggesting to put her on an IV and wait for at least a week or two. He thinks her stomach is inflamed from all the regurgitating. That seems logical. He told me he once was on an IV for 6 months. That seems strange that a surgeon would be on an IV for that long. Just saying! I didn't question him on that point. He is offering to redo the surgery and either remove the band or put a larger size band around her stomach. My wife encouraging my wife to make an appointment with a different surgeon to get a second opinion. He claims there are on 2 sizes of bands and my wife currently has the smaller band. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I read her your comments which has her and I both taking this situation very seriously.

Forgive my bluntness, but I really think you need a new surgeon ASAP. The one your wife is going to sounds like a total quack. No one goes on IV's for months with the Lap Band!! If you are dehydrated to the point of needing an IV you need the band unfilled immediately. Being as she has nothing to unfill, then other measures must be taken. Saying it's due to stomach swelling is also crap- she had surgery in June. Any swelling from surgery is long since gone months ago.

If I were in your wife's shoes, not only would be finding a new surgeon immediately but I wouldn't let her current one touch me with a tissue let alone a scalpel. No way in heck I'd let him do surgery on me again.

Again, just sharing my opinion based on my experience and knowledge of the band.

I will definitely keep your wife in my prayers.

Can you tell us who installed your wife's band? This is wrong and dangerous on all levels.

Honestly, I think you have a lawsuit, it would be in your best interest to NOT allow this surgeon to not touch your wife any longer and get to a new band surgeon, ASAP, most US surgeons will take her, especially if there is a surgeon that has done wrong doing and your wife's surgeon does not sound ethical.

The RED FLAG IS...being on an IV (feeding tube) for 6 months, no reputable lap band surgeon would put a patient through this with a ADJUSTABLE OR REMOVABLE lap band, this only happens to Gastric Bypass or Sleeve folks when they don't have a choice.

I would say get a second opinion however if she has been vomiting a lot it will cause her stoma to swell a lot and therefore she will not be able to swallow.

Not only a second opinion but a lawyer too.

Also, she should not be vomiting THAT MUCH on an empty band to cause obstruction and swelling.

Many people think it's quite normal to vomit daily with the band, until it almost kills them and then they come back bitter and say how horrible the lap band is and everyone will suffer the same fate.

I agree vomiting is never normal with the band. Some people think its a part of everyday life but its not. Some people refuse to educate themselves about their bands or for some reason do not want to talk to their doctors. I have yet to see what the fear of talking to your doctor is.

My opinion - your wife has her plate full. The last thing she needs to get herself involved with is the legal system - for now. Let her get another surgeon, another opinion. She needs to get better, and have more information without the possible added stress of a lawyer. There is a time for everything. And, if her surgeon was negligent or incompetent, then go after him.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
