LapBand Before Having Kids/Pregnancy

Recommended Posts

I'm 26, and getting banded July 26th. I went and visited my ObGyn for a check up and she was not very welcoming to the news about my LapBand decision. She doesn't agree since I haven't had kids yet. Anyone out there who LapBand before having children?

Also, how was the pregnancy with the LapBand? Any complications? Pain? Etc.

My doctor made me really nervous today about my decision and I wanted to get other peoples opinions!

Thank you!

I have 2 kids, an 11 yr old & 2 yr old boys. I was banded 5/28/13. I plan on trieing to get pregnant next fall, approx 18 mos post surgery. My dr said that though they would like me to wait 2 yrs, I should be fine. The biggest concern is getting maximum weight loss before getting pregnant

I am 24 and getting the LapBand. No kids. But I plan on having them! As pinky punk said they want you to wait at least 2 years. I am sure there are complications with the lapband and pregnancy but I KNOW there are complications with being obese and pregnant.

I had my band a year after my daughter was born and Thats was my concern too as well cause I was considering the sleeve at the time and my doctor said the band would be better considering my age and wanting more babies my obgyn too didn't want for me to have the band either suggested some medication with a healthy diet most doctors Dont want you to have the band Im not exactly sure why but Thats the second doctor telling me that my band doctor did say I wouldn't have any problems with my band but I have heard that once u unfill from Ur band completely that it isn't as tight as before not sure how true that is hope this helps god bless ;-)

i was banded back in january of 2011. just had my first in june of 2013. he was eight pounds six ounces, 20 inches long. i had half of the restriction removed so i could eat more for nutrition for the baby and so i didn't get stuck. the only complication i had was gestational diabetes and that wasn't associated with the band at all. i had the band so i'd lose weight and have a healthy pregnancy and baby, which i did. it was my fertility doctor who told me to get the surgery so reduce the risks of miscarriage.

I got my band in Jan 2011 and am currently 24w pregnant with my first. Surgeon asked me to wait at least 18 months before trying to get pregnant, which I did. Have had no Fluid removed so still somewhere between 6-7cc's in the band. I've noticed my appetite has diminished these past few weeks, almost like it was when I first got the band, so I suspect my growing belly might be affecting things a bit. Otherwise my only concern/complain is that my port is beginning to protrude horribly and feels like it's trying to flip when I lie down, though this was a problem before I got pregnant due to weight loss. I've only gained about 5lbs, and my OB is well aware of the band and has no problems or concerns about it. ETA: Oh, and I'll be 32 next month.

I had my baby two months ago and I have had the band for 9 years this year...I did have to have an unfill due to not being able to eat anything at all. My doctor was very supportive with me and knew I had the band..I did however gain a lot of weight with pregnancy and am now trying to start the motativation of getting that off again being that we want a second child. My band doctor keeps telling me that I should only gain 15lbs while pregnant and that was hard to due with the appetite I had. The band doesn't effect your pregnancy if it wasn't for the weightloss with the band I wouldn't have my miracle baby now!

I'm 29, banded almost a year and a half ago. I'm down 90lbs. We don't have any kids yet, but are planning to. My OB/GYN thought it was the best thing ever when she found out. That's part of the reason I got banded--to have a healthier pregnancy and be active with future kids. The doc said most of the time she forgets her patients have a band until she feels the port! She said most people do not need an unfill unless they are vomiting or having trouble eating enough calories. She said you only need 300 extra calories a day for a healthy baby.

Thank you all for your responses. It is much more reassuring I'm doing the right thing after hearing your stories. I just know my ObGyn looked at me like I was crazy when I told her. She thinks at 26 and a BMI of 32...that I should continue to try to lose weight without having the LapBand, especially since I have no kids yet. It is very comforting reading all your successes with the band and pregnancy.

Thank you!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
