I can understand how it can lead to psychological issues, but health issues?

I just can't make the connection logically.

The only thing I can think of is that the obesity was a byproduct of emotional issues caused by the physical punishment and the cardiovascular and arthritis issues were a byproduct of the obesity.

Maybe? I don't know. I'm just trying to logically make the connection between the issues.

I am a chunk munk and I was spanked as a child.I really dont think that has anything to do with why I am over weight.

Lest we all forget, correlation does not imply causation. Obesity, health and corporal punishment could all have another component that ties them together (i.e. socio-economic position).

I can understand what they are trying to say in this study. The stimulus one receives from being punished in a corporal sense alters the brain chemistry of the child in question. (This may be true for an adult where corporal punishment or other similar stimuli such as domestic violence is involved as well.) There by changing the development of the emotional state, sense of security and self-esteem of the individual in question.

An altered state of being, one that is out of balance and dysfunctional can and is the one of the leading causes of most dis-ease, including and not limited to obesity.

so im going to be my normal Smart a$$ self and say..... you can find a study most anywhere that will back what ever one wants to believe.

My view.... Children are what they grow up with. If the parents are over weight the child has a higher chance that he/she will be over weight too.... Only because they eat what we eat... if we as adults eat food that is unhealthy so will our children. My parents were not over weight when i grew up... because my mom or dad cooked a meal... We rarely ate out and hardly ever ate at Fast food places. My weight gain came in my late twenties and thirties... Why.. because i move to the city and started eating bad foods.

Next time you go eat at a buffett.... Look around at the over weight people there... then look at their children... 90% will be over weight and so will their kids.

I think the Food stamp program is another contributor.... It make it too easy to buy unhealthy food choices. Ever get behind a person at the grocery that's paying with Assistance..... it is horrifying ... basket full of candy, chip, Cookies... pre packaged food... tons of soda and ice cream... unhealthy foods... and this is what our youth of today has to chose from in their homes...

Video games... another contributor to weight gain.... we NEVER stayed inside.... we were riding bikes, running... building forts... playing hide and seek......

Get the kids eating better by being a good example and make them go play out side.....

Yes your right, studies are just that, it's where a small minority of the population is taken in and Doctors and behaviorists try to understand why certain criteria exist for them and not others.

I am overweight. I have been throughout my children's whole lives. They however, are not. My youngest son who is now 18 does not have one ounce of fat on his body. He is lean, fit and active. I am learning a lot from studying his behavior. The way he eats and knows when to stop eating etc.

My boys grew up in the video game internet generation, I would have had to lock them out to force them to stay outside. Even with every toy known to man, jungle gyms, swing sets, bikes and swimming pools they wanted to be inside on their butt playing games.

I think that it's the choices we make and the reasons we make them that contribute to our weight. Just because I ate poorly didn't mean the kids did or had to. I had/have my own issues and try not to put those on their plates. (Literally:)

I think that is another reason why parents spank, and why overweight parents beget overweight kids. We have a tendancy to press our issues onto others instead of taking them up ourselves and working through them. Just more of my 2cents.

Re: food stamps - I have been on them as a child and grew up in a poor town where most ppl we're on them. Since then have continued to live on low income communities. I don't think it's just a matter of poor choices. I think when you are dealing with the stress of poverty that your body is in survival mode and is craving sugars and fats. Also depending where you are, in LICs you often find "food deserts" where fresh local food is scarce so the options become junky. Add to that that not all farm stands are equipped to take SNAp, etc.

For sure we can all stand to make better choices. It's just my opinion that there's more to it from a biological and socio-economic position than decision making skills.
