I just swallowed my gum...

Recommended Posts

Ok, I feel real silly posting this.... But, I'm 7 days post-op, and I'm SO glad that I haven't had any nausea or vomiting. Then, a few minutes ago, I accidentally swallowed my gum. Someone PLEASE tell me that chances are very slim that it's coming back up.

It should fit through your band. You haven't had a fill, have you? was it a piece of gum or a huge wad?

If you can drink your fluids, you're probably ok. Were you told no gum? I was.

Good. It was just one piece of doublemint. But, since I haven't vomited since I got the band, I don't know what it's like and I would really like to avoid it at all costs.

My friend laughed at me. I was in a meeting, and all of a sudden said, "Sh*t...I just swallowed my gum." Then I just got up and walked out to get Water. Lol.

No, thankfully. It's gotten me past the fact that its the only thing I'm allowed to chew right now.

Someone had posted about chewing gum. That they were told by their bariactric nurse not to chew gum because if you swallow it, it could get stuck in the stoma and you would have to have it scraped off. I don't know if that is true about scraping it or if it was just a scare tactic, but I'm going to ask my Dr. because I was told no gum.

My first post-op appointment is in the morning, so I'll be asking at that time. I think that's a load of crap that it would have to be scraped off. The stomach (even the pouch) is moist tissue. It's not like its the same texture as your shoe tread. :)

I was told by my surgeon that he has had to surgically remove gum from band patients who swallowed it.. it's not that it has to be scraped off, it gets stuck in the stoma .. depends on how bad you want to chew gum I guess... I'm not that brave.. don't want anymore surgery if I can get around it... just be careful..

I am a gum swallor so my dr said no gum. I suck a tic tac to relieve the oral craving. I was told it could have to be surgically removed if it got stuck. UKKKKKKKK!

There'd be no mistaking it if it was stuck. You'd know pretty quickly... But not having any fills I think it would be highly unlikely to get stuck.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
