You should be on a liquid diet for the first phase after surgery. You should be drinking liquids only- broths, Water, Protein Shakes, etc.

Make sure to review the nutritional info you received from your surgical team for every phase of post-op healing and if you have questions you should contact your Dr for clarification because each Dr has their own requirements.

you had surgery 5 days ago right?

first let me say if you're concerned call your doc...

second, you're gonna be sore, they pumped you full of gas sewed a port to your muscle, put a band around your stomach and sewed that too. I was sore for 2 weeks before it really started getting better and the 3rd to 8th days were the worst.

also it can take awhile for your appetite to return, but be careful of what your eating most people are only on liquids right now.

again though it is normal to be very sore, listen to your body and if you think something isn't right call your dr.s office thats what their there for.

as far as having regrets i guess thats up to you, i had surgery in april and have lost 50lbs and still going strong, I have no regrets, maybe in a few weeks i hope you won't regret it either!

Goodluck and take care ;)

Could not have said it better. But make sure that you get up and walk as much as you can. Don't stay on your back in bed. The more you walk, the quicker the gas will retreat. If you need to take something, try gas-x tabs that melt in your mouth. Bets wishes, Karen

I'm there with you but also had a hernia repaired. My surgery was not suppose to be longer than two hours and I was there for three and a half! My husband kind of freaked out since he is a DDS and knew it was taking longer than it should. I guess my hernia was HUGE in the words of my surgeon. Needless to say blogs and forums are a double edge sword because I read about people already off there pain meds and feeling great...not me! But I am looking at this as a positive! I will no longer need my Prilosec, steer clear of tomatoes and sleep on three pillows! I'm trying to get enough liquid and drink my Protein shake even if in tiny amounts. I feel like my biggest victory has been no nausea or vomiting. Yes I'm weak but it's only been four days! Don't beat yourself up...

As the above posts have already shared:

Having regrets initially post op is normal. You have just had surgery and made a commitment to make significant changes to your lifestyle. Inherently, people do not embrace change.

You should have been given comprehensive instructions for your post op recovery by your surgeon's office. You should follow them to the letter.

It is way too early for you to be eating even soft foods, and chili is not a soft food.

Walking does help immensely to resolve any discomfort with gas post op.

It would benefit you to get in contact with your surgeon ASAP and make them aware of your situation.

Ditto to all the above. You will be sore for a few days or a week or two maybe. You had your body invaded with medical equipment. Liquids, sip sip sip and walk walk walk and the gas will feel better soon. The first few days I thought I had made a mistake. 4 months later and 60 pounds lighter I am glad I did it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
