Anasthesia got me worried!

Recommended Posts

Ok, My surgery is this Friday the 21st and i'm not dredding the actual surgery so much. But what has me worried is the Anasthesia. I have never been put under deep Anasthesia before. Infact the only time I have ever been put under was for my EGD for the Lap Band and that is a minimal amount and for a very bried amount of time. Here's my mindset, WHAT IF I DONT WAKE UP!!! I've heard of this happening to people before. Os thier a way they can be assured that I will wake up? This may sound comical but for me it is a really nail biter.

stop stressing, you'll be fine. I worried about that with my hysterectomy in '04, my 2 knee surgeries in '06 and '07, my lap band last year and then bam I had to have my glallbladder out in December so I've had my share of it. It's the best sleep. They should give you something beforehand to calm you then wheel you in the OR and guess what I blurted out to everyone in the OR half drunk "are ya'll nervous", I mean come on, they all cracked up at me and said no are you and I said nope let's roll, let's do this thing and before I knew it and I mean it was like 2 mins I was out and then I was waking up in recovery to 2 very nice nurses and my mom sitting there by my side. Next thing I knew I was chewing on ice chips and a popsicle.

Hi BgOBoy

You have NOTHING to worry about... I just had my 60th surgery (long story) last October and have NEVER had any issues. I've been under for as long as 9 hours and have always come out with flying colours. My first surgery was done when I was 3 months old and then in October at the age of 46. (I have spinabifida and hydrocephalus). I've had 9 spinal fusions and also surgery done on my brain for many shunt surgeries and there were no issues being put under or being woken up.

YOU WILL BE FINE!!!!

Let us know how your feeling and if you have any questions please feel free to email me. I also have free long distance and if you would like to chat on the phone I'd be happy to call you.

The anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist have a lot of training and experience and know what they are doing. They are monitoring you very closely throughout the entire procedure. They have to document your vital signs (Heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation) every 5 minutes throughout the procedure. They give you a dose of a med called versed when they come get you which has a very calming affect and for some makes it so you don't remember much. Once you are in the operating room they put Patches on your chest to monitor your heartrate, put a blood pressure cuff on your arm and an oxygen saturation probe on your finger. (they are good at telling you what they are doing each step of the way). Then they drift you off to sleep. The next thing you know you are in recovery and it's all over with.

You will do just fine and it's completely normal to be nervous about surgery. Here's to a speedy recovery!

Anesthesia has come a long way in the past several years! I have severe sleep apnea, and believe me I was very concerned and scared to undergo any surgeries!!!

My doctor required blood work, a stress test, EKG, upper GI and several other tests before he would do my surgery. I remember going into the OR, chatting with the doctor, and next thing I knew I was awake in recovery--it was like it never happened!

Good luck, it is normal to worry about any surgery, esp. major elective procedures!

I was just banded last week, I was worried about the same thing. Im a big ol boy too, so I understand. You'll be fine man, I'm so glad I did it. 9 days out and 40 lbs down from preop to now. It's worth it!

You will be fine and very closely monitored! They will likely give you medicine before putting you to sleep that will make you not even care...you will be so relaxed! I've had several surgeries over the years and find it to be a VERY VERY GOOD NAP!

If you are truly fearful, talk to the anesthesiologist about it as he should talk with you that morning.

Ultimately, talking to God helps me;)

You have sooo got this!

A friend of mine knows a guy who went in for rny surgery and he never woke up. Dead at 52 years of age. So it can happen.

Yeah, it happens... but surgeons who do elective surgery are usually very careful in screening potential clients. That's why they require the stress tests, EKG, upper GI, etc.

I asked my doctor, point blank, if he ever lost a patient during or after surgery. I was very, very blunt with the anesthesiologist during our morning presurgical meeting before surgery. I made him well aware of my severe sleep apnea, and expressed my concerns.

My doctor, from day one, always warned that all surgeries carry some risks, including death. Everyone here has weighed the options, risks, and benefits with the surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
