Seriously?!!? Weight loss 'tips'

Recommended Posts

My mother came to visit and proceeded to tell me I need to lose weight....multiple times. As she was leaving she handed me some diet pills, metabalife?, and told me to start taking them. The bottle looked old so I looked at the expiration date and it had expired in 2003!!!! She does not know I am getting lap band in 2 weeks. When she sees me next and notices I have lost weight I am going to tell her it was the expired metabalife pills that she gave me that helped hahaha :P oh family.

What was the craziest/weirdest/most outrageous/offensive thing someone has advised you to do to lose weight?

The boiled cabbage diet. I didn't do it, I hate cabbage. My friend did it for a week and swore by it. He lost 6-7 lbs but he's clueless to the fact that most of the weight loss was from excess Water he was carrying. One more? SENSA! What a joke. Supposedly it dulls the taste of food so it's not so appealing? It just made me want to eat more and more.

I feel you! My mom had the lapband done so all her friends and some family members were telling her and me that I should get the lapband too! They ask her almost everytime they talk to her if I got the band?! I finally told her to tell them that I'm not getting surgery and I know what do if I want to lose weight. How rude. I simply think it's no ones business.

Craziest thing? Years ago I told a guy I was dating, that at one point I was too thin; had health issues because of it. He whispered in my ear "do it again". Really?

Nothing hurts more than when a 'loved one' criticizes. I suspect since you haven't told your mother about your surgery, she's not very supportive. I would look to avoid her for a while as she seems to be toxic for you.

My sister is also heavy and she is getting pressure from some family members to do what I did and get the lapband. I've never pressured her and try to downplay my focus on eating per the band when I'm with her as it is very important to me that she make that decision herself.

Craziest diet I ever did? Ummm I did the herbalife diet pills when they had the bad stuff in them. Lost lots of weight but at the same time I ended up gaining all my weight back and them some.

A friend of mine was getting goat pee injections to lose weight..

Another one of my friends worked with a lady who had the lap band done, and all she was not supportive at all with her decision, all she did was complain that the lady with the lap band didn't lose any weight. Well duh, what did she expect? For her to lose the weight overnight? She lost a decent amount and met her goal but because she didn't drop it in seconds she was a failure to my friend.

That's why I have not told anyone other than my close supportive family.

it is very important to me that she make that decision herself.

This is so true..... When people go on diet programs that work really well, they tend to tell everyone how great it is; you should try it, blah blah. When it comes to WLS, this is not something to push others toward. It's such a huge life changing decision; one that people need to come to on their own. Good for you, the way you're handling this with your sister.

A couple of (heavy) people I know are asking various things about the surgery; eating, limitations, problems, etc. I answer their questions, but NEVER say "it's great - you should try it". I always tell them what a big decision it is, and that you really need to be ready and prepared for the life change. I do not want to be responsible for anyone jumping in, only to regret their decision. It's just TOO big to be taken lightly.

I can't believe she did that!! Oh my gosh, I'd have gone ballistic!!

Whenever someone has given me unsolicited (often ridiculous) advice about my weight in the past, I usually have just said "Well I can lose weight but you can't fix ignorant. Good luck with that".

Let's see....before I went to college I did the pregnant women's urine injections. (I can't believe my mother paid for this.) Acupuncture by "stapling" my ears (also paid for by my mother).

Once I had a physiotherapist recommend The Papaya Diet for spot reducing. "It will take the fat off your hips but leave your breasts!!!" he said. Um....I didn't go back to him.

Geez...... The shrink - TOTALLY creepy.

My mother took me to a diet doctor when I was 9; in 1964. He put me on ALL kinds of pills; amphetamines, Water pills, and supplements to replace what I wasn't eating. The diet pill cycle repeated itself so many times throughout my life, and there were points where I was totally strung out on them.. One time (when I was 26), I had actually gotten too thin, but still saw more to lose. By this time I was already taking 6 pills a day, but they were losing their punch. Actually, I was losing my (drug induced) motivation, and started reaching out to crank, cocaine.....ANYthing to stop the raging animal I saw coming. Well, none of it worked. I gained all the weight back, blah blah. Ya'll know the story.

Anyway, back to taking pure amphetamines at 9 years old.... It was the early sixties, and they didn't know then what they know now. In my mother's defense, this was HER diet doctor, and she'd done quite well with that protocol. Years later, she normalized her size and maintained it throughout her life. But for me (and my sisters), the struggle lives on, and all three of us carry excess poundage.....to varying degrees.

People seriously inject themselves with goat urine to lose weight!? pregnant women's urine too?! wow. Did it work at all!?

My mom has her own food issues so I try to just ignore her when she makes comments about my weight. Lots of therapy has gone into my mother/daughter relationship :) . She has taught me a lot of what NOT to do when I have a daughter.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
