For those of you recovering from being banded this July:

Are you in pain?? I've read many people say they've had no problems and that's NOT been the case for me.

My incisions are very sore, especially when I move from sitting down or laying down to standing up, etc. I don't think(?) I'm experiencing "gas pain?" The pain I feel is around my incision and is sharp and stabbing. Not constant, just when I'm doing the activities above.

I have constant diarrhea, as I've read in previous blogs, liquids in-liquids out. I also feel SO BLOATED. I'm prepping for full liquids phase on Wed. when I'm able to add Protein Shakes, SF pudding, FF yogurt, and Tomato Soup. But when I think about it, I'm so bloated I don't think I could eat! I'm trying to stay hydrated as much as possible, constantly sipping.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I will admit my pain tolerance is low.

Maggie

May I just vent for a minute?

I'm feeling a lack of support in general. Believe it or not, from my own FATHER who had this procedure done as well as by my friends. My mom has been the only one to listen to my emotional roller-coaster and I feel horrible dumping it on her for the fourth day in a row since my surgery!

For one, my surgery was out of town, the day before the 4th. I understand with the holiday, people are busy and such. But I didn't get many sell wishes from my friends and I didn't get any visitors in the hospital (despite having 10+ friends from the area) and a few people mention saying they'd visit. When my best friend had her baby, I drove out of town to come visit her. I'm just starting to feel like there's just not a friend out there that will reciprocate the support I offer them in times of need. Also, one of my best friends keeps asking over and over and over again about the program. The pre-op diet, post-op diet, fills, etc. I tell her the same info many times. Then when I explained it usually takes 2-3 fills before you start to feel restriction on your portion she said "that doesn't sound fun at all." I finally just said "Lol well I didn't do it bc it's fun. I did it because I needed to be healthy." Like support me much?!

Lastly...my dad. He had the Lapband done in 2011. Followed the liquid diet, didnt lose any weight beforehand but lost like an awesome 15-20lbs before surgery. After surgery, he says he thinks he did liquids for a couple of weeks until he just transitioned into full solids. I know this slowed his loss down bc he never made the Changes. He made some Protein changes, he meets his protein and hydration goals for the day. But he eats whatever he wants. Today when he got home I was in tears because nothing tastes good. Water tastes like metal, Jello is gross, blahhh. He said "are you going to stick with this?" Then "are you ready to lose the weight?" Then I asked him, "are you going to let me cook my own meals!" "Well of course but I don't have to eat it." Like really dad?? Why can't you try to support yourself and me and try some healthy stuff? All the while, my mom is in the process too so if I move out of town is my mom going to have to do it all alone while my dad brings chips and ice cream into the house?!!

Ughhhhhhh. Thanks for listening in advance.

I know it can be frustrating when you don't feel supportive. My family has been supportive on the surface, same with friends but I didn't have any hospital visitors other than my husband. You are doing this for yourself ultimately and you can do this! We are all here to support you!

For future july banders it's strange I don't feel any different a week post op. I did have horrible gas in my shoulder and every so often my body likes to remind I had survey but I'm almost 100% my per surgery self. For Protein I have been drinking the Isopure coconut and blue one. Coconut reminds me of Malibu rum :) my goal for NYE is to down another 30 pounds I lost 25 so far. Finally I feel normal me again I decided to lay low the past week didn't tell many of my friends I was having it done. My issue for not telling them was I felt like a failure that I couldn't do this on my own. I realize it is a great tool and is probably what I needed but all my years of failing on diets just left me hopeless... Dieting since 10 years old 28 years of up/down weight-loss im done i want to be in the one hundreds don't care if its 198 so sick of seeing the 2 as the first number !!!!The people who do kno are super supportive and as I feel more comfortable I will tell the rest of my friends. I know they will all be supportive as I cleaned my list of friends and only kept the good ones to old for drama and bs. I am so glad I found this sight you all have been so helpful. I read more than I post :)

I will be 2 weeks post-op on Wednesday and I totally get what you are saying about not feeling like you had surgery. So crazy!

I'm having constant diarrhea too! I'm tired of broth. I'm getting some chewable Vitamins tomorrow. I start on my full liquids starting Friday . I can't wait ... I'm bloated as well. And I'm sippin Water with my crushed ice (Sonic) to keep hydrated. My incisions are sore and I get those bubbles when I swallow. Now a good feeling going down . I'm just walking walking walking !

I would say my incisioins hurt for the first week. The first 5 days were pretty bad. My 1 week of liquids also included Protein Shakes and Soup so mine wasn't as hard as yours. It will get better! I started soft foods and I was so excited today!

Hi Everyone! I am almost 2 weeks post-op and feeling great! I was down 32 pounds but I'm back up to only down 28. This number is total including pre-op. I need to keep in mind that the first 6 to 8 weeks are for healing. Once I started on the mushies I started putting a bit back on. I need to step away from the scale for a while. I will need a fill. I can eat more than a cup though I not allowing myself. I go in a month for my first fill. I can feel my port which I find kind of cool. When I want to eat more I just feel my port and it reminds me that I had surgery and I need to cherish this gift!

Where is your port located? Mine is going up by my left underarm...towards my breast area...sorry trying to explain a part of the body isn't easy. I am so nervous about my liver not being "shrunk" enough. I didn't do a liquid diet although I have started replacing meals with Isopure to get used to it. Over the holiday I ate a little Pasta salad and I shouldn't have. I feel like I'm going to cry!!! I cannot think about having to be rejected because of my liver. I have lost 10 pounds on the diet I have been on since 6/17 so please say a prayer for me...God will know exactly who I am!!! I'm scheduled for 7/11 with preop 7/10. I also decided to stay off work for a month. I'm having a hiatal hernia repaired too. I have been plagued by heartburn for at least 10 years and my hernia, I'm told, is pretty big. Ok, Winkie, I didn't mean to take over your post! Sorry, I just needed to tell someone!!! Thanks for listening.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
