Senna for Constipation?

Recommended Posts

I did a search on Senna and Senekot, but nothing came up.

Since I really started losing weight by eating so much less, I have had some Constipation issues. I really never feel the urge to go anymore, I just try to go. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's just painful and I get little results.

I had been taking Dulcolax about once a week when I start to feel pain, but it really doesn't do much. I still never get the urge go go. My mom, a nurse, said I should start taking senna daily. Anybody have any experience with this?

Senna is found in Weight Loss Teas. There are all kinds of brands & different kinds. They work!! Sometimes a little too good. When I drink the tea at night I definately have the urge to "go" in the morning. :eekB: You have to be careful because sometimes it's more of an explosion. I wouldn't take it if you have someplace to be in the morning. It can be a little dangerous!!!! But yes, it works!!

Strawart,

I use the Walmart brand Peri-Colace. Its a stool softner with laxative (Sennosides).

Not an immediate result, but a gentle one. When problems arise, Ill have about 3 with my morning coffee for about 3 days...

this usually gets me on the right track!

Happy Trails to you :biggrin1:

I found that Easy Moves tea was good tasting and worked well. Just needed 1 cup a day for 2 evenings and all was well.

Thanks for your replies, everybody. My next question is a little more specific - does anybody take something EVERY DAY? I can always get myself to go without straining if I take a laxative, but I am having to take laxatives about once a week. I am looking to take something every day so I don't have to decide whether or not it's time to bring in the big guns again.

Hi,

Not certain if you can do this every day but...if you eat or suck on some sugar free candy or Cookies or chocolate you will crap your brains out.

(Note the warning on the packages about it-if it doesn't have a warning-it won't work) Just a little hint from one of my friends who had a hysto and needed similiar relief.

StrawartS--

My humble opinion is to take a stool softener on a daily basis....this gently draws Water from the bowel wall....a laxative forces the wall to contract and then your bowel becomes dependent on the laxative. Of course, Fiber is GREAT....prevents colon cancer and helps regulate your bowels. Of course, continue your lots of Water and exercise!! Lots of fiber!!! Start slow as you will start bloating and gassing.....

God Bless,

Melody

StrawartS ~ This is driving me crazy :phanvan I can't seem to remember the stool softener I took after the birth of my second son. :eekB: I do recall that Colace didn't do the trick for me, so I remember the OB recommended something else. I know I bought it at Wal-Mart. Great help, huh? I do think Melody has a good point b/c I remember something being said from the OB along those lines.....a stool softener is better than a laxative. I'm going to do some research and check my hard drive to see if I saved an e-mail or such. I will be needing it myself. :rolleyes

I have found that if I eat an apple every day it seems to keep me pretty regular and it is natural. Also, try 8oz of Prune juice every morning till you have that easy bowel movement then cut back as needed.

The more Water you drink the easier bowel movements are as well. So try to get in your 64 oz every day.

These seem to work for me. The apple really works great. Nice and soft but not diarrhea movements. I know I know TMI!! LOL!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
