The good news is that the post diet isn't too horrible in some ways because its only the "head hunger" I'm almost a week out and still don't feel hungry...I just eat my 3 Dr ordered meals a day (4oz portions) and I keep on. Its been easier than I thought because my tummys not like oooh eat that...and that...oh boy and that! Lol good luck!!!!

Lol that's funny cuz I feel like that's what's going on in my head right now... the worst part is my husband is deployed so I have no one to make my kids meals so far so it's like torture! Your Dr. is letting you eat real food after a week?! Lucky... my Dr. is making me stay on the SAME diet I am on now Clear liquids 2wks pre- and post- op... only sugarfree Jello and popsicles, low sodium chicken broth, ONE carbmaster yogurt a day, ONE 1/2cp serving of Protein pudding a day and then 3 Protein "meal replacement" drinks a day... really hard cuz everything is liquid and liquid won't hold satiety long...

Yeah my doctor just monitors how your handling food and progresses you as necessary. He's a well known surgeon and trained many of surgeon and everyone I know who has had surgery though him has done great IF the follow the rules of course. And actually I had my one week check up today and I have to do the pour off the spoon foods till this weekend and then I can try easily chewed foods this weekend and by the end of next week solids (again well chewed/easily chewed) none of the fibrous veggies or tough meats. As for the family thing. I'm lucky to have a boyfriend who is a string bean and doesn't eat a lot nor very often. My troubles will be at work where I'll have to use my brain because I work in like a group home for mentally disabled individuals and I cook their meals which are all planned so some nights they have my weaknesses. Like pre-op day I was on liquids and they had runzas and french fries....obviously not good for me and I was about to have surgery so I made it, got it out of my sight and just kept thinking about how good I will look down the line if I use some form of will power. I know you can do this too. Those liquids will turn into solids soon enough. Best of luck and keep me posted on how your doing :)

Will do! When you met with him at your pre-op appt, did you happen to ask if he fills the band during surgery? I'm curious! My pre-op appt is on Monday!

Each pre-op diet can differ by Doctor, weight and health issue. Mainly to help shrink your liver so it's easier to apply the band! Sticking to it makes surgery easier and recovery! I'm post-op 8 days all liquid for two weeks. It isn't that bad, I crave but then I tell myself it isn't worth my goal. I so look forward to puréed stage :) So far I've lost 10.2 lbs....

Worst part is the Gas from surgery I would of rather given birth again! It's doable after a few days. I too have research and found the lap-band is the safest but with any surgery there are risks but so is breathing the air.

I was banded March 29, 2013.... We have no promise of tomorrow but today at least I know I have a chance!!!! Happy Banding. This is a great place for support.

My Dr puts his patients on a 2 weeks low carb diet. He said its like an Atkins diet. I have actually done this diet before and lost a lot of weight but got tired of eating the same things. He said its to shrink my liver, it makes it easier to get to your stomach since your liver sits on top of it. He also said he can tell when someone doesn't follow the pre-op diet b/c it takes him longer to their surgery. And believe me I ain't trying to be on that operating table any longer than I have to. :) :) Is there a low carb, decent tasting shake, that anyone can recommend?

There have been ppl on this board who have come out of surgery unbanded b/c they didn't shrink their liver. What a bummer that would be. Get cut open and sewn back up and no band.

My doctor only puts you on a pre-op diet if you are a large male. Or a very overweight woman say 400-500 pounds. Otherwise he has never had a need to have someone shrink their liver before surgery. Which I know is a common practice among surgeons... so weird how they are all so different. And I agree with the person above me....that would suck to go in for surgery only to wake up and be told its not enough. :/

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
