Problem drinking protein

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week post op, surgery was Feb 20th, I am on liquids for 2 weeks and the dietician told me that I need to make sure that I get in plenty of Protein everyday. I am having a HARD time doing this. I bought the Pure Protein, chocolate flavor, and everytime I smell it or think about it, I start gagging and trying to vomit. Can someone recommend another type to try, if not I'm just not going to be able to get in the needed protein.

Thanks,

Lauren

I didn't like the pure Protein either. I like Special K (get about anywhere) and AMP (gnc). Good luck.

You can check out New whey Protein shots. They come in a a test tube looking bottle. 42g of Protein, 180 calories, and they come in various fruit flavors. I have tried the watermelon and it was really good. Think watermelon Jolly Rancher.

As for powders, you can look at Isopure, which is a powder that mixes clear and they have a bunch of flavors to choose from. Or there is Syntrax Nectars.

Check your local Vitamin Shoppe. They are good about you exchanging if you do not like them.

Thanks for the info! I have heard about those Protein Shots, but was still hesitant to try those. Maybe I can do those better.

Note on those - if you put them in the fridge they will thicken up a bit. Some people might be turned off by the texture. But they taste fine a room temp.

Jolly Rancher, huh? Before surgery, my nurse recommended that I drink fruit Isopure drinks. They taste like Jolly Ranchers and have 50 gms of protein. So I paid $70 for a case of them on GNC.com. Helloooo...They don't taste anything like Jolly Ranchers. They were nasty. Ended up giving my whole case to a friend whos a body builder. Also spent a fortune on Muscle Milk. Also gross. ended up spending $15 on a big tub of Protein Powder at Walmart that was drinkable.

I know what you mean about gagging to drink them tho. Every hour when I was sposed to drink 1 oz of Protein shake, I gagged. The strawberry isn't too badtho. reminds me of strawberry Quick. Never had another Protein Shake after I started eating real food. You're almost there!

I tried the fruit punch Protein 42g Protein shot today. For me was a bit like drinking cough Syrup but without the medicine flavor. So I'd drink them if I need to but will try to get my protein elsewhere first.

I'm pretty fond of light vanilla soy milk and the strawberry Protein Powder. If I mix it in a blender (or ninja) it's frothy and tastes like a strawberry shake.

Surprisingly, Slimfast now makes a high Protein shake. 20g of Protein per bottle. It's not super great tasting but it's not horrible and doesn't have that weird whey smell a lot of other brands seem to have.

My favorite is definitely unjury, however you can only buy it online so it's a little more difficult to plan for.

For pre-made shakes I prefer the EAS ADDvantage all of their flavors are better than Atkins are usually lower calories and have better Protein content (17g). I also find they're more filling.

The Protein Shots aren't bad fruit punch is the best the special k ones are full of sugar but there are Atkins shakes that only have 1 gram of sugar try that maybe. Good luck

I had the same problem, I ended up going back to my pre op shakes. You can make them super cold, lots of ice, drink out of a straw. At the beginning I even had trouble with my pre op shakes and added Walden Farms chocolate sauce and sometimes instant coffee to try to mask the taste.

Increase Protein other ways yoguart. I added cottage cheese to my Soup and blended it..............

My clinic wasn't too concerned with Protein during my liquid post op stage, they just didn't want me to be dehydrated. Once I could eat my protein I was good.

Good luck to you.

Special K is great, but it also has like 16g of sugar and you should only have 6-7g per serving!

I like the EAS Carb Advantage strawberry & Milk chocolate flavors. I have just recently purchased unflavored Whey Protein from Amazon & began making my own shakes:) I am using Unsweetened Almond Milk (40 cals, 2 carbs, 1 protein & 0 sugar) 1-2 scoops of protein (25 grams of protein per scoop, 2 carbs & 2 sugars) & strawberries. My nurse said I could use sugar free Jello flavoring & it is great in your shakes.< /p>

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
