Social Stigma and Full Disclosure

Well, I am 12 days away from realizing my weight loss dreams in the form of a lap band, and I don't really want to tell anyone! My husband knows, my immediate family knows, but other than that I don't want to tell anybody.

At work, everyone is under the impression that I am having my gall bladder removed. I hate lieing, but I feel like if I told the truth, people would be like, "Oh shame on you for taking time off work to do this, it is not medically necessary, you are having elective surgery!"

But that's not true! For me, it is very medically necessary! I've tried for ten years to take off weight that has steadily been packing on. I have asthma and sleep apnea, and am high risk for diabetes.

I feel like people look down on those who have the surgery because they "took the easy way out" and didn't lose through diet and exercise, although I hear that the lap band lifestyle is anything but easy.

Any thoughts? Anyone else hesitant to come clean, too, or am I just plain crazy??

when people ask me questions that I think are rude I try to say "Now why would you be interested in that?" Not always that nice but I try

I am a very private person. I told my boss because I needed to take some time off but I didn't even tell HR what procedure I was having. I told 2 friends, both of whom I wish would have the surgery. I told my husband and my 21 year old daughter, but only because she was nagging about my eating when I was on the 2 week pre-op diet.

My sons all think I had a hernia operation. Actually, my surgeon repaired my hiatal hernia when he put in the lap band.

It's been almost 9 weeks since I was banded and I've lost about 27 pounds. Funny, none of my friends has said a word so I guess I must have been really fat if nobody notices that much weight loss - LOL! When and if they do notice, I plan to say that I am dieting but do not plan to disclose the surgery.
