How many days until solids, according to your Dr?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if there is as much variability in the post-op diets as the pre-op diets. Even my surgeon himself gave some different directions. The nutritionist said liquids for two weeks, the surgeon said 5 days liquids, 5 days mushy, then on to solids.

How long has everyone been told to stay on liquids? And how much of that do you think is for diet reasons versus for the stomach to heal?

I wonder the same thing... The doctor gave me the schedule in weeks but both his nurse and my nutritionist stated that I would probably only be on each "week" a couple of days. My first post op appointment is Tuesday. I have worked in some things from week two, but I won't go any further until I meet with him.

I was allowed solids on day 10 but I know many others stay on liquids for quite awhile. But it's still best to follow your doctors directions.

It was 4 weeks before I started with solid foods. 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks mushy semi-solids then solids.

I'm being told 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushies and then solids. On day 4 post opt and am so not interested in solids yet anyway...still working hard to get the liquids down.

My instructions were two weeks liquids, one week mushies. So, I'm supposed to be on mushies now, but I'm sucking at it... Sad, cuz I did so well on the pre-op diet!! Needless to say, I haven't lost much weight since surgery.

2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks mushies, then solids..I was told by my surgeon that you need the time to let your stomach heal...the stomach processing solid food too early could break the stitches around the band....this is what I was told...I would definitely get some clarification from your doctors office.. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
