Fitness shoes!

Recommended Posts

Hiyas all! :)

Ok well, I wanted to see if there was anyone out there who can recommend a good pair of work out shoes. Walking, dancing. I am getting into the swing of things and at home while I exercise, I usually do it barefoot. I've read some say it's ok, while other's say it can cause stress on your ankles etc. ( from other sites ). I want every bit of help that will contribute to my success!

Thanks in advance!

Hey! I thought I'd throw out my two cents worth on shoes :) I learned the hard way if you are going to be doing anything that amounts to much (mileage or hours working out in the shoes) you should go and be fitted by an expert, one who can look at your pronation/gait so that you don't end up hurting your feet/ankles and end up on the couch due to injury. I trained for a half marathon back in 2010 and I didn't know anything about shoes and wearing the right ones...so I did what any girl would do and bought some cute ones haha turns out they were all kind of wrong for my feet...I finished the race with bloody feet and 3 toenails that turned black and fell off...also caused an issue with a tendon in my foot b/c the shoes weren't supporting my feet correctly...so SUPER long story just to say that you should go to a sporting goods store and find out if they have someone working there who does that...I went to a store here in my hometown that sponsors alot of races in the area and they have someone staffed that does just that. I ended up needing a "neutral" shoe and the first pair I bought was by Brooks...(i've had several Brooks now they are great) Currently I'm wearing some by Mizuno they are great and are even super cute! Its amazing the difference, and I didn't even realize the others didn't feel good! So thats my rant on shoes, haha sorry for the novel...Good luck to you!

As someone who worked at a Jazzercise for a few years, I was always told if someone asked for sneaker recommendations for dance/aerobics it is wise to tell them that cross trainers provide the best support. Running shoes don't provide enough support for the directional changes you make during dance. They also don't usually have a ton of grip on the floor allowing you to change direction more easily which takes a lot of stress off your hips, knees, and ankles. The Nike Musique and Ryka Studio D are worn by many of the women and fitness instructors of all ages and seem to be very popular.

Go to a reputable store that caters to runners.....have a "expert" analyze your feet and recommend shoes.....they will not necessarily be expensive.....

There are too many issues anyone may have....pronation, supination, etc.....

Although "Black Toe" is common, it is never desirable....and poor shoes, and socks for that matter guarantee it!

ABSOLUTELY get good shoes! As mentioned go to an actual Running store they will fit you properly. It doesn't matter if you aren't or can't run yet - walking and running is the same shoe needed. FYI Brooks are often the best for "large" people - expect to pay $90-&$125 and do so gladly. On a side note if you haven't gotten a HR monitor then get one its HUGELY valuable.

I'm a big fan of minimalist shoes. I don't wear zero mm drop shoes for running, but I hated the clunky robot shoes the shoe store guys wanted me to wear. I wound up with some New Balance that are light as a feather. Ran a 1/2 in them with no probs . No blisters, black toes, etc. But they have a 11mm heel drop so not true barefoot. My cross trainers are also NB and the are even more minimal, with a 4 mm drop. They are great for Zumba and such as the have a little slip to them and are very.flexible.

There are different schools of thought about shoes, especially running. But you'll get the standard party line from any good shoe store . I resisted that because every shoe they said was good for my neutral foot was way too supportive and uncomfortable . I just get going back until I found shoes that felt good.

In hiking one is encouraged to pick a.boot solely on comfort... if you're going to stomp around in other for miles and miles , it should feel good. Seems reasonable :)

Ok.. Now I need to ask another question.. I went to sports authority and the "experts" there.. sucked and didn't offer me any real information other than my shoe size and that didn't even seem accurate. ><.. where did you all go to get fit? Thanks all for all your help.. means a lot!~

ACCK!! Sports authority is not an Authority ; ) Goggle "Running Shoe stores in xxx city you live in" that should lead you to store - check their website should look like these:

http://www.1stplacesports.com/index.html

http://runpacers.com/

http://www.jacksonvillerunningcompany.com/#2889

*** they all have races posted / do training / talk about how they fit you etc...

Hope this helps

New but smart : ) the real running store you go to will have the sox no worries. Brooks makes good socks. But one pair - two if they are in a two pack. Test them out before invest in more but will help with possible blisters etc...

You are a warrior ! Win the war - free yourself from the prison we all were : )

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
