Banded 1 yr and have it removed!!

Is it possible something else is going on? If you are counting calories, keeping to your recommended daily caloric intake, eating max a cup, getting your Protein, Water and Vitamins in and exercising...and you're not losing weight sounds like a metabolic problem. Have you had your thyroid checked? Do you feel tired, cold, Hair loss, easily gain weight, etc? Calories in, calories out only works if the system is running smoothly. Unfortunately, you can go to great lengths with a screwy system and not get the results you expect which is very frustrating. I'm sure you will do what is best for you, but please consider seeing an endocrinologist and having your thyroid/adrenal glands/pituitary tested. In high school I worked out 6 days a week and ate 1000-1200 calories a day just to maintain my weight. I did not lose and it wasn't until I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started medication that I could even begin dieting correctly. Good luck!

I don't mean to sound rude, but if you are doing everything right, it is impossible for you not to lose weight. Unless you are eatin all carbs, or go all day not eating and eat at night. Even without exercise the band should still be taking weight off. If you are 250lbs and it takes roughly 2000-2300 just to maintain your weight, and you only eat say 1500 calories a day that is a deficit minimum of 3500 cal. Resulting in a weight loss of a 1l b a week, and that is if you live a completely sedetary lifestyle. I just find it hard to believe.

Bluetiger sorry to hear about your dad.

I agree with the hypothyroid. I gained 60 in a short period of time before I was diagnosed. After struggle of getting the medication adjusted properly I hit a max at 100lbs hince the reason for the band. Unfortunately for us with thyroid disease we do have to work twice as hard. I would highly recommend a lab draw. I'm also have been a RN for 13 yrs so you can take the info you like as some medical advice. Good Luck

Okay I have to vent a little. I'm over 2 years out from surgery eat under 1200 calories a day and exercise at least an hour 7 days a week. Recently my nurse practitioner suggested I make an appointment with an oncologist to check my thyroid. She feels that I am NOT losing weight fast enough considering my effort. I read a lot of comments lately on the site that anyone who is not losing quickly is clearly not following the rules or lied to us. It really strikes me as the kind of discrimination we use to get as fat people. The dismissive attitude of some of the people on this site is really starting to be trying. I don't cheat on me my food plan and I exercise like a lunatic and I'm not losing weight. I don't eat carbs for fun I don't drink and a few people more dedicated than I am. I wish some people would remember what it was like to be look down on and not be so judgemental.

Band does not work for everyone! My physician has stopped doing the band because of the rate of success. Some people are very sensitive to fills and just the band it self and no matter what they do, they don't lose weight. The reflux you are having is a direct result of the band and one of the complications and your physician is correct to remove if this is not getting better and looking into other alternatives for you. As far as risks of others surgeries. All surgery carries risks and benefits, I know people who have had band erosion, I know people who have had their sleeve leek and I know people who continue to have problems with the gastric bypass. All in all the benefits of weight lose surgery out way the risks of continued obesity. I know you are sad to lose your band and frightened to move forward not know if this will work either but doing something is always better than doing nothing and wishing you had done something. I wish you luck and offer you prayers and much success in what YOU and YOUR physician think is best for you and I am truly sorry this did not work for you.

Honk

You should start reading some other post. People are getting tired of not getting support and being ridiculed for not using the band properly. I think people are finally having enough of not looking for support on a forum that was supposed to be build on support

They and I have noticed it comes from the same group of people. They have been referred as the "old timers"

Well at the end of the day, I'm going to do what's best for me. They're always risk for everything we do. I always do my research and talked to my few friends that had the sleeve done. I try not to think negatively on things so serious. I will be fine. Thanks for your concerns.

Nancy,

I was banded on oct 25th so I am definitely not an old timer. This is just reality. All this talk of the band doesn't work for everyone or sometimes the band just doesn't work is excuse my French bull ****. The band does exactly what is suppose to do. If you find ways to eat around it or don't do your part it is not the band that's not working, it's you. When people come on here and say they are doing everything exactly like they should but are still not losing only 1 of two things is happening, and neither of those things are the band. It is either you are lying and you really aren't doing your part, or you have something going on medically, like a thyroid problem. That's all there is too it. It is scientifically not possible to fail unless 1 of those two things happen.

You shouldn't be so quick to jump on "the old timers" they have much experience and been down these roads and have a lot of helpful advice. Didn't your mother raise you to respect your elders?

Sommers, most likely you have not had enough fills to hit your green zone yet. This is the time it's all about you doing it.

I was banded 10/15/12 and have 1 fill of 3cc, not in green zone either.

I've been on a strict diet for 6mths so starting this journey I already had the counting calories and the one cup rule already in place so I have been able to continue to loose.

I read a post of a newbie telling other newbies they will never see the weight they lost on pre op diet again and that is not true. When you go from liquid diet & transition back to real food, you most likely will gain some or be stuck at the same weight until your body adjjust. So just hang in there and follow the plan, it WILL start to come off.

Best of health to you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
