Hiatal Hernia surgery and lap band in the same operation

Recommended Posts

Looks like I will have two surgeons working on me. The bariatric surgeon goes in and sets up the tools inside of me and then the thoracic surgeon goes inside and fixes the hiatal hernia and then the lap band is installed. Anybody have that done and is the band working. Thoracic surgeon made it sound like sometimes the band does not hold has tightly after the hernia surgery as it would have if the hernia surgery had not been needed. Would love to hear from anyone out there hat has had these two procedures done at the same time.

yes i had that done to me in june. (i didnt know of the hernia until after surgery)..granted it was painful to take very deep breaths so i didnt... but i dont think it was any (more or less) pain from the band surgery itself. i used my pain meds to help.

I had both surgeries at the same time. My surgeon is both a bariatric and genral- so he does both surgeries. My surgeon explaned what they did to me and basically he fixed the hernia where it will not redevelop and the way he sews the lapband in that should not be a problem either.

Most people who are obese have a hiatal hernia- very common.

This was my second time getting the band. My previous band slipped which was also the cause of my hernia. This time was a lot more painful with both procedures over just the band but to me that was suspected. I am on day 4 post op and every day seems to be a little better. You will do just fine having both. Like the others have said, it's very common. My doctor also did both procedures.

I have the same thing. My surgery is scheduled in January. One month from today. I have a hernia too. Mine is medium sized. They suggested the sleeve but don't want that. They said they will repair it during surgery but my tightening of the band may not be as tight as others.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
