I'm 5 Days Post Op And Exhausted! Is This Normal?

Recommended Posts

i am 5 days post op, and have been so exhausted since my surgery I have mainly been resting. I have been having some trouble with gas however, so I decided to do a lil light exercise so i did about 20 mins on my rec. bike and then went for a shower, and I had to lean against the shower walls because I was soo exhausted . Is this normal?

Same here, my first week I couldn't believe how much I was sleeping. I could take 2-3 hour long naps and still go to bed at night, which is not normal for me :). But you are healing, the surgery is minimally invasive, but still major surgery, so let your body recoup, your energy will come back soon.

The first week I couldn't hold my arms over my head long enough to Shampoo my hair, much less dry it. I had to sit immediately after going upstairs. It was awful and totally unexpected! I felt I started getting some strength and stamina back once I started eating. After the seventh day post-surgery, I was pretty much back to normal, but I haven't forgotten those early days. I have a friend that is getting ready to have lap-band because she has seen my success... I told her I wouldn't come near her that first week because she will hate my guts!

Make sure you're getting your Protein in somehow. It helps you keep up, and it helps you lose weight...

I think it is pretty normal... I was that way too. I think part of it may be dehydration...our bodies go through a lot with surgery and all we are giving it back is liquid. I know that the first week I was only permitted to have Clear liquids so I couldn't get in any Protein and I actually had a really hard time drinking, so I know a big part of my problem was dehydration.

Just keep drinking as much as you can. I hope you feel better!

You'll be feeling normal again soon - but yes I think that's pretty common. I mostly sit at work and had two weeks off but was so surprised how hard that first day back was - mostly just exhausting like you said. It does get better.

This is so reassuring to me! I, too, just had surgery last week and can't believe how tired I am all the time! I hope I turn the corner on this soon!

You will find everyday is better than the day before. I'm 10 days post op and feel great. I also had a hiatal hernia repair.

As others have written, it`s quite normal but I would suggest that you ensure good intake of Protein, Water and Vitamins especially Iron. This coupled with light exercise helps. Hopefully the tiredness has subsided by now.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
