Just Banded & Now Recuperating

Recommended Posts

I was banded two days ago....and now I'm home. Had to stay overnight because of a hernia repair.

I've been walking very often & sipping lots of liquids. I am using Gas X strips and although the shoulder pain had subsided...its now back :-(

Crushed my Multivitamin & calcium citrate this morning. I'll be taking my first Protein Shake in a couple of hours.

Feeling pretty good....just can't shake this shoulder pain :(

Hi Vahonie - I was banded on Wednesday too so I can relate. I find that the gas x really helps and so does a heating pad. In fact, I think the heating pad is more effective. Walking helps too. Hope you feel better today.

i second the heating pad, it was my best friend during the days after post op. also walk, walk, walk. if you have a rocking chair, rock on that for awhile (as long as it's not too painful). my nurse suggested it to me and it really helped with the gas pains.

Congrats on your surgery and I hope you feel better soon.

The heating pad was my best friend! I also did a lot of walking. Even though I couldn't stand up perfectly straight, I got out and walked. I believe that helped me heal really quickly! Best of luck and hoping for your speedy recovery!

I was banded two days ago too and found the shoulder pain starting today. Thanks to everyone who posted tips about the heating pad. I have been using a gel called Biofreeze and it has been working great. Kind of life Rub-A535, it has worked magic. We've had terrible weather so I've been walking on my treadmill and have found that it has helped alot. I have also been drinking peppermint tea to help with the gas and also using Gas-x strips.

Update Day 5 Post Op..... OMG feeling so much better today, shoulder pain has decreased..when it is happening I saw that everyone was saying walk it out as best you can and heat pack, I also read that arm windmills or arms above head and now I have hit the jackpot... really helping, scale has gone from..... I am not sure I can take this to, ok this is all manageable. Doing well with drinking Water and either adding a touch of squeezed lemon or sqeezed orange juice managing a protien drink for one meal and some Soup for the other... my only vice is a skinny coffee once a day, also doing the glass of water with benfibre once daily. Using lots of pillows to get comfy. Took off waterproof dressings yesterday evening, steristrips intact and wounds look clean and healing nicely, wounds are feeling better wthout dressing ontop. Bruising is mostly around the incision near the naval. Haven't breezed through but am feeling so positive today, enjoying the beautiful sunshine and pottering around the house, looking forward to being back at work tomorrow :)

HI everyone,

I was banded on the 18th. The heating pad was absolutely my best friend. Feeling better today, will we always burp as much as we are now. Is anyone else HUNGRY? I had a hernia repair too so that is where most of my pain is coming from. Went out today for a bit, but just feel exhausted. What is everyone drinking on there liquid diets?

Good Luck everyone!

I also banded the 18th and am NOT hungry at all!!!!! I can't hardly eat like 2 tiny bites of pudding or yogurt and I'm stuffed!!! At least I think I am, it's been hard to differentiate between full and tight from surgery, hope in a few more days I will be able to get some Protein in!

Are you allowed yogurt so soon? I was on clears for 7 days, full liquids 7 days, and did not get yogurt until day 22.

I was banded on July19th as well and I'm still pretty miserable. Part of that is because I had three procedures in one: gallbladder removal, hernia repair an the band. They also had a lot of complications during the surgery...they couldn't get the air tube in... It took an hour of trying. And the they couldn't pump me as full of air so my surgeon had a much tighter working area, so I'm definitely very sore. My throat was the main thing that bothered me postoperatively. I could barly swallow anything. Even now when I'm drinking my Clear Liquids, I feel like it gets stuck half way down. I am afraid my doc is going to put me in the hospital when I go back for my follow up appointment because I'm barely drinking 24oz of Fluid a day. I'm really just feeling down about the whole thing :(

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
