Sharing The Op Expierence? Where Did It Go?

Recommended Posts

Good Evening all!

When I first joined, I read on the forums, about some surgery experiences. Now I cant find it, for the life of me. Been searching and searching.

Anyone know where it is? I am 10 days before I go under the knife. I need to know about the anesthesia, and would like to hear anyone opinion.

I don't know about the others but I only remember being talked to as they wheeled me into the OR. Next was waking up. I only had 3 very small incesions and 1 a little larger. My insurance required me to stay overnight. I had ice chips in recovery, and was sipping Water soon after getting in my room. I had broth for lunch and carnation instant Breakfast for dinner. Doc put in a med delivery system so I had little pain. The gas started my first night home and was real bad for about three days. It would wake me at night and I would have to get up and walk around the house.

Its only a light anesthetic and lasts around an hour sometimes less .

I had a sedative in the pre op holding area so I was feeling loopy once I got to the OR. I hopped up on the table (well, not literally...that would have been interesting with Valium on board) and was talking to the anesthesiologist about the cruise I had just taken to the Caribbean. Suddenly I felt a burning in my vein which I knew to be Propofol, a drug used for anesthesia induction. I knew I'd been out in about 10 seconds, and sure enough the next thing I remember is waking up in the recovery area. My vision was a little blurry because they put lubricant in my eyes to keep them from drying out, but otherwise I felt fine. Then my incision started hurting, so the nurse gave me some pain meds and I felt better. The worst pain in my opinion was from the carbon dioxide the surgeon used to insufflate my abdomen. It goes away after a few days though.

Hi Kathie- what your looking for is a sticky topic at the top of the

POST-Operation Lap Band Surgery Questions & Answers forum. It's the surgery day stories thread. That is where people have posted their experiences.

As for me, it was a pretty easy go. I have had 3 c-sections and an ankle surgery. This was BY FAR easier than all those. I was in and out same day. I was in surgery about an hour. Before the surgery, I was nervous (I hate needles and always stress about the IV) so they gave me a little shot of somethin' somethin' (I can't remember what it was, but it was good stuff) and next thing I know I was in recovery. The anesthetic was not super heavy, I was able to "get out" from under it quickly- where with my last c-section where I had to be put completely out it was tougher. The big thing is the gas they pump you full of to maneuver around your guts. Walk, walk, walk is my big advice!

I remember going in the anesthesioly talking to me about merengue ( I'm Dominican ) the he said I'm put this mask on is just natural air and that was last thing I remembered then I woke up minimalain except the left shoulder, as soon as I woke up the got me up to walk the took me for the X-rays to make sure everything was fine made me drink this nasty clear liquid almost throw up then a white thick liquid! After that went back to recovery slept then when I woke up they sai I had to drink 4 oz of Water before I get to go home took me like 45 mins! I went in at 5:30 surgery was at 7:40 I went under at 7:43 I woke up at 9:40 went home at 2:30!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
