i scheduled my first information seminar, which is required before moving onto the actual consultation with the doctor.. so i have mixed emotions, im super excited but also very nervous. i chose dr harrison from lehigh valley hospital in allentown pa. i am hoping to get more information on how everything works and if they think ill be a good candidate for the procedure.

my husband isnt really on board with me doing this, he feels i shoild keep attempting to lose it naturally, which is a bit frustrating, but over all i honestly dont think i care if he is on board or not.. im not sure if thats a good or bad thing. when i told him about the free info night he wasnt thrilled, and said he thinks i shouldnt do it.. has anyone else not had the full support from their spouse or friends?

i know he wants me to be healthy and it isnt some fetish to have me big or anything.. i think he is genuinely worried about the procedure and the efffect on me negatively, if any, and the skin. i showed him some images and videos on youtube of people showing all their excess skin. i feel like im not flabby, im big but no that big, my skin has remained pretty tight, except for a little pouch im starting to get in my lower tummy.. i know hes scared what i might look like if my skin doesnt tighten back up.. to be honest i am too..

Don't worry about your husband. He will eventually come around when he see how determine you are. Give him some websites to look at in his spare time. You will be amazed when you notice a turn around. Stay strong and focus and the determination will follow. Good luck.

When I told people I was getting the Lap Band, they all thought I was insane. "Oh you don't need that, you're not that big." They weren't in my head or my body, so I did what was best for me and I have never regretted it.

As for the excess skin, it usually comes with the territory when you lose a lot of weight. As far as I'm concerned, it's better to be thin and healthy with a little droopy skin than face a lifetime of obesity related health problems. That's my opinion, anyway. When your husband sees how healthy and happy you're becoming, he'll have to be on board with it.

My husband has been supportive, but was a little worried at the beginning. Thankfully he came with me to the information seminar. There, he was able to see how simple it was and all the benefits and talk to the dr too. Try to get him to go with you so he can see what its about. tell him its just information and that you're not making a decision, but just getting info on the option. when it comes down to it, you will be losing naturally, because the band is just a tool to help you stay on track with your diet... its not a cure and you can eat anything later.

as for the skin... i've freaked out about that too. looking at youtube vids about it, has not helped! lol! i have stopped doing that. and honestly, i've seen people lose weight without surgery and they still have excess skin... so its about your body and how it will do to losing weight, period. right now, i try not to worry about that, since there's always surgery for that later if needed! and by the way... on biggest loser, they lose without surgery and they always have extra skin! thats why near the end of the season, they always start using tight stretchy shirts instead of the sports bras from the beginning! ;)

hope it works out! let us know what happens and how it goes!

See if you can get him to go to that seminar with you. It could be an eye opening experience for him. My Wife and I both attended and her wanting to have a baby decided to wait and not have the surgery. I contemplated for a long time between Band or Bypass and we jointly decided that even though I was very big I had no health issues to warrant having my plumbing re-routed. I was banded in April and feel great.

Have you made attempts to lose on your own? For a lot of people losing is not the problem it is keeping off. While I understand you want to press on with or without you're husbands blessing it truly believe you will have a higher chance of success having him in your corner and cheering you on and providing the support..

I love this site and everyone on it but I think I would be struggling a lot if weren't for the support and encouragement from my Wife.

Just a male's opinion.....good luck!!

Maybe if you take him with you he will understand the procedure more. My husband was not on board at first and in fact he rolled his eyes when I mentioned it. I think his hesitation was more financial than my health...lol He hates to spend money. However I just kept going to the other appointments and then notified him of my date. It is nice to have them on board...but ultimately this is your health and your body and you have the right to do anything you want to it. Most husbands have a problem with it because they are worried you will lose the weight and leave them. It is an insecure response and most likely will not happen. I would just encourage him but don't let him influence you in this decision...it is yours and yours alone.

Support is a wonderful thing .............. but taking control of your own life and body is even better. You will look better whether you have lose skin or not. but you will be 100% healthier , My husband was worried about the operation part, which is a piece of cake compared to learning the lifestyle that banded people must learn. If he doesn't get onboard well do whats best for you.. if you don't you may really regret it. Happy wife Happy life....

Maybe you can get him to come with you to the info session so he can hear more and understand how this tool works? Just a thought. Good luck!

thanks guys, this site has truly been a blessing for me. I am seriously considering your advice to take him along. I didn't ask bc I felt well if he doesn't want me doing it why would he come along, which I feel like an idiot now for thinking lol. I can see the insecure issue bc even as a bigger girl he is super attracted to me and gets a little jealous sometimes haha. hopefully he'll still feel that way if I were thinner. as for the skin I'm hoping a Tummy Tuck wil not be needed :0/ any suggestions to help reduce the risk of skin, like working out while loosing weight or anything?

again thank u guys so very much <3

Try to include him as much as you both are comfortable with. Having this procedure done is a life saver and if you feel its right for you then go ahead with it. I would suggest you do your research on every possible issue he might have with it and when you sit down and have a heart to heart conversation with him about this subject. Your husband seeing that you have done your research and that this is indeed something you have given plenty of actual thought it might just change his mind!

Having support from the people closest to you i believe is VERY important. Especially on the days where you want to "give up" and are frustrated.

There is really no way to get around the stretching of skin while one is obese; many of the same things happen with pregnancy. And I also believe that genetics and age have some influence over the resiliency of skin. Once it is stretched, it is what it is.

In the grand scheme of things, health is most important. If after you loose the weight if you are unhappy with your appearance, there are plastic surgery options you can consider having.

It would be a great benefit to you for your husband to be supportive of your decision regarding the surgery...but ultimately it is your body and your choice. I hope he is mature and insightful enough to understand that. Try to include him in all of the education and information consults so he has a better understanding about the procedure and the reasons this is so important to you.

When I told one of the two friends that I told, she was shocked, and told me that she didn't think I needed it, that I wasn't that big. But after a few minutes of telling her that I don't feel good about myself any more, thats when she was on board.

@Christina If you just explain to your husband that this is for you and keep it personal in a way that he realizes that you aren't happy, I'm sure he'll come along. I'll admit, when my boyfriend told me this is what he wanted to do, I was against it, then I started researching EVERYTHING and once I had all the facts it sounded like something that I could do with out being as scared as I was. I'm still scared, but not as much as before. Just gather all the information that you can, knowlege is power!

Good Luck. Speaking as a guy, I would like to think he'll support you. If anything is a little scared about you getting the surgery, but being a guy he has to hide it with "why don't you just try to lose it naturally". Personally my response is..."I still have to lose it naturally, this is just a tool to assist me along the way. The device doesn't gobble up extra food or calories, just gets me fuller quicker..."

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
