:cry I'm still about 2 weeks out from getting my first fill. Funniest thing happened today.....had a Arby's sandwich for lunch and had the hardest time with it. Never did before but today was weird. I had the hardest time getting it down. I finally just threw it back in the bag and just drank my crysal light (when I was able to breath again of course) Then I thought I was going to hurl it all back up. Like it was just sitting there waiting to come but it never did. My mouth started to Water and I was trying to spit, actually it was "slimy" was this PB'ing or Sliming as I've often heard it called. I started to think that maybe I actually was starting to feel some restriction because I'm kind of having a hard time in that dept too. :phanvan Just wondered.

Hey Kim -

Yep - that sounds about right - a slime - oooooohhhhhh. :-) Hey - I like your new avatar!

I've always though your avatar was so cute... So this is what sliming is :faint:

Do you think this is what restriction is for me or that I just had a hard time with that particular food?

Ah thanks - Who really has a picture of themself eating?? Me. ;-( Thought is was appropriate at the time though!

I dunno. I think it happened to me when I didn't chew well enough so something got "stuck". Not sure that means restriction (although the restriction causes it I think). Just that when it tried to pass through there was no way in heck that it would go through. On another thread tonight, they said try meat tenderizer mixed with a bit of warm Fluid or papaya extract to break down the Protein and cause the food to break apart. Discussion is still ongoing as to exactly what kind foods this will work on. My research leads me to think that it will work on anything with protein.

No firm answers here as I really don't know! My counselor said that the slime comes from your body trying to produce mucus to make whatever is stuck slide down. If it remains stuck, your body just keeps producing this and it's a vicious cycle.

I think restriction is where you eat and get full after eating a small amount. Not necessarily equivalent to "stuck". Just my thoughts - maybe we'll hear otherwise :-).

This is the effect that restriction has when you're not careful enough chewing or have eaten too fast, yep! It's not a "complication," though, so I'm going to move this thread.

Sliming is indeed the excess production of saliva; your body's reaction to something not going through the esophagus the way it should. Swallowing this saliva is the worst thing you can do; that's why it's a good idea to have a receptacle handy if you're not near a bathroom while eating and think you might have this problem.

Presumably you've come away from this experience motivated to be a little more careful when eating, so as to avoid it in future. Behavior modifiction in action! This is the way the band works--welcome to bandlandia!

I had to chuckle when I read this.

I currently eat in my living room (who wants to sit at a table alone? blech), and if I'm eating chicken (which has caused many problems for me in the past), I always have one of those little ziploc containers with a lid on the table with me, just in case. I started doing that after I couldn't get up off the couch fast enough. Honestly, you do *not* want to have to clean the slime off your clothes, floor or furniture later.

yup, that was indeed sliming and sort of normal/expected behaviour if you are not careful. :faint:

I'm at what I think is a good level of restriction and I hardly ever slime, get stuck or PB, but I'm careful because I HATE it when I PB. HATE, HATE, HATE. I feel the same way about being stuck....

Anyway, yup, that slime is what I refer to as "ectoplasm" ... ick ick ick

Yep, that was sliming, alright... Now, it may have made it worse when you grabed the crystal light. Drinking while eating is a no-no...1) it can clean the pouch out and you will still be hungery, and 2) if you have eaten your solid Protein, the CL will come straight back out the way it went in...you should wait at least an hour after eating to drink anything.

Thanks all.... I've discovered today that I may not be giving myself a chance to find out if I truly have restriction. I think I'm eating "around the band" a little too often. But the sliming thing was definatly a wake up call!!!

I dont know about the stretching part but I have had a lot of sucess just eating the meat from the sandwiches, throw out the bun. Chew like crazy and enjoy the meat, its pretty good for you too. I think that Arbys has the best meat. I never feel guilty eating that stuff as some of the beef I cook is hard for me to eat. I keep a clean paper cup with a lid in my car just in case, I has already come in handy sorry to say!

Yep, sounds like both restriction and slimes to me. Might have been the bread. That kills a lot of us.

Ugh, I hate the slimes. It always reminds me of that dinosaur in Jurassic Park that spits slime out of their mouth to kill that "thick" guy that was stealing the DNA in the Barbasol can!!

I could never eat sandiches or hamburgers of any type. Ever. Always resulted in PB's. Took only a couple of times for me to learn tho. :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
