Hi all,

I was banded yesterday by Dr. Les Miles in Birmingham, AL. He also repaired a large hiatal hernia I had no idea about. So far it has been a breeze. I am pretty sore at the port site, but other than that, I'm doing great. No nausea and doing well with liquids. I was really afraid and worried before surgery. I am a nurse and know too much I guess- LOL. if everything continues as well as it is now, I worried for nothing. I'm planning on returning to work on Monday so hopefully most of the soreness will be gone by then.

Congrats!!!!! I'm hoping to be able to schedule mine soon - I'm also a nurse, but I'm self pay. My employer has an obesity exclusion in our policy. Please keep me informed at how you do!

That stinks about your insurance. Most hospitals encourage weight loss with special programs, etc so I'm surprised about the exclusion. I know I am only POD 2, but I feel great. Even walked the dog this morning. As I said yesterday, the port site is the only thing bothering me.

I wasn't planning on surgery until the end of April or first of May, but my surgeon's office called on the 2nd to tell me I was approved and that they had a cancellation on the 10th if I wanted it. Believe it or not, I actually hestitated for a second because I didn't have everything I needed. I had to order Protein and have it shipped express. I had to run to Walmart so I could begin full liquids and then clears. I had to rush to my pre-op visit, to have labs drawn and to pre-admission testing. Use this time to get yourself prepared so you don't have to run around at the last minute. Also, with you being private pay, you don't have to wait 6 months, do you? That was what seemed to take forever- but I used that time to get an exercise routine established that I plan on starting back next week.

Let me know when your surgery is scheduled. I'm here if you want to talk. I wish I had done this years ago!

Debbie

Yet another nurse banded on 4/6.POD 7 feeling good .tolerating full liquids well.got extremely hungry POD 5.but otherwise ok.still soar at port site.stri strips just came off yesterday.

I didn't have a lot of the problems other people experience.no vomitting minimal nausea.the crazy L shoulder gas pain lasted only a few hours after surgery.any way good to see nurses (who know better) taking our life back.wonder if there is a banded nurses forum? I think there should be.

Thamm,

I was a nervous wreck. I've always worked surgery and recovery so I know too much. Everything was a breeze though. I had no PONV or shoulder pain from the gas. The worst part is the soreness at the port site. Let me know how you do,

POD #3- still can't bend over. I've gotten really good at picking stuff up off the floor by holding onto something and doing an arabesque- LOL. Advanced to fulls this morning and thoroughly enjoyed my mocha Protein shake.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
