Can Someone Explain This?

Recommended Posts

Ok. I've just been really curious about this and am finally getting the nerve to ask. It will sound like a silly question, but I just can't find the answer anywhere. Here it goes....why are potato chips considered a slider food, but rice and pastas are no nos for a lot of folks? I am racking my brain trying to figure this out. Rice and noodles seem so soft and "loose" while chips and crackers so rigid and hard to break down. Hmmmm?? I am weeks away from being able to have any of these, but it has been a question I have had since the beginning. Anyone know?

This is just what I reckon: noodles and rice tend to bloat. If you put noodles or rice and stand them in some hot Water, they double in size. This can happen when you eat it and it will bloat above the band and make you feel stuck.

But potato chips are sliced thin and because they've been fried, I guess, they don't seem to bloat above the band, and I reckon the high fat content makes it easy for it to just slide past the band.

If you put a cracker or a potato chip in a cup of warm Water, it dissolves to mush. Thus, once you chew, chips and crackers are slider foods.

Foods like Pasta and rice absorb warm Water and grow in volume. They also get sticky when they are in warm water. A few bites of Pasta or rice can form a sticky glob and get stuck.

I am 1 1/2 months post op and have had my first fill of 4cc on an 11 cc band. I gave up most of the snack foods, but I do eat Pasta and rice. So far no problems. Small bitefulls and breaks between bites works for me.

I am at restriction and can eat Pasta and rice; but since they are not a favorite of mine I don't bother.

Anything that can disolve in your mouth after a lot of chewing is a slider: chips, crackers, Cookies, ice cream, shakes.

No, That would be way too much to lose in a month. Since the surgery on Jan 30th I lost 23 pounds. I had been yoyoing for decades, always creeping up in the pounds. I started dieting at my highest weight which was at 320 lbs last spring. I plateaued at 271 lbs for 3 months and was starting to creep up. That is when I finally decided to have this tool placed into my body.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
