First Fill And Disappointed...

Recommended Posts

I went for my first fill last Wednesday and the nurse gave me some lidocaine because it was my first fill and she said I was still swollen. After she gave me that, she tried to find my port and was hurting me so bad I was crying...and I'm not a baby. She gave me more lidocaine and it helped a little but she said she kept hitting the porcelain that was around the band and "couldn't find" the mesh part to stick the needle through. She finally called in another nurse and she found it right away. She extracted 1.8 cc's and then filled it with 2.8 cc's. Needless to say, I thought the fills were going to be easy but mine was not. I still have pain where my port is so maybe next time after I have more time to heal it will be better. Also, can I ask for more of a fill or do I just get the 1 cc every time? I was told I didn't have to be on liquids or anything...I don't feel any differently than I did before my fill...I guess I need to be more proactive when talking to the nurse but to be honest after the pain started I just went into shock mode and didn't ask...although I had to help the nurse count from 1.8 to 2.8 because she kept looking at the syringe trying to figure out how to determine 2.8 cc's...wonderful.

Wow, my surgeon never had a problem finding my port. But I don't have a lot of belly fat. My first couple of fills the amount was up to my surgeon. After that, we discussed amount. By that point, he figured I knew what a tiny fill would do to me. Even at that, he'd let me know if he thought I was asking for too much.

So basically what I am saying is, you can ask for more, but ultimately, the decision is with the provider. My surgeon was conservative (but not that conservative!) He said he'd rather I creep up on the green zone than blast through it.

Scarey! Sounds like you need to ask your surgeon to do the next fill. I have had 6 or 7 fills and they shouldn't hurt!

That does sound like a nightmare. I have had the nurse twirl the needle around looking for the opening. It did take me until 10.6 CC's in a 11 CC band to get restriction. I was empty at first fill and got 3 CC's. I think my next one was 2 and then it went to 1's. I would ask for the other nurse next time. I prefer one of the nurses at my doctor's office and alway make my appointments with her.

Be patient you still have about 2 to 3 more fills before you start to really feel the restrictions. What is diffrent is that i have never had a nurse do fills on me i have always had a doctor do the fills.

But be patient you will soon feel restrictions. it took me about my third fill to feel restriction which was about 2 to 3 months. Right now your body is still adjusting to this band around the stomach and is still healing.

Band 12/14/2009

current have: 5.2cc in my band.

last fill 2/22/12 added 1.2cc (new doctor/Dr. Lublin:second visit with him)

Oh wow that's terrible!

For the record, I have a ton of belly fat but my doc had no problem finding my port and I had no pain. What you went through is not normal at all.

I would insist the doc do the fills himself going forward.

My dr does fills himself. He has me blow my stomach up and he just stuck the needle in no pain. If you blow up your stomach you will see that the port becomes easier to find

all the pain you experienced aside, my first fill was disappointing restriction-wise also. I started out with nothing in my band. And my first fill, and all fills since, have been 1 cc. I have had 3 fills and am I 3cc and I'm just starting to feel restriction. I'll tell you what others have told me. "Hang in there. it will happen for you". Also to feel the best possible restriction eat substantial food texture-wise (like fish, chicken, low fat cheese, and vegetables like broccoli and carrots) things that will stay in your pouch and make you feel full. I am trying to do a better job choosing food as well. GOOD LUCK! STAY STRONG!

I am sorry you are having problems. At first my fills were not painful but I had my port moved under my muscle and even with my doc and me under an xray machine he still couldnt find my port. Somtimes I would wait until Ihad a surgery so he would fill me while I was under because usually it took up to 30 minutes 2-3 needles and me crying in pain.

I had my port moved again after 16 months and now I could do fills myself it is in such a good spot.

As for restriction all docs are different when it comes to fills. Some are safe and do 1cc at a time etc or some fill you up according to your restriction. I knew someone a low bmi 11cc band got 9cc her first fill!

I choose my fill amount and used to go 1-2cc at a time but now so .2-.5cc for fills.

My Dr does his own fills. He only had trouble finding my port twice. i am often sore for a few days after. But i've found that after loosing some more weight he tends finds it right off. Maybe the nurse wasn't very experienced with fills? i think I agree that you should request a different nurse for the next fill.

I had a similar experience and it was very painful. However, I contacted the doctor and asked him whether or not a fill should hurt that much. He said definitely not! He then had his assistant visit the particular nurse and show her how to find the port. She was instructed to use a pen and follow the outline and draw a circle. With the circle, she couldn't miss the port. After that she now finds the port and no painkiller is necessary. I was also instructed to raise both legs and it makes the port stand out so the fill is easier and now I have fills without pain. I have had six fills by four different people and only the one nurse gave painful fills. The others were painfree. Good luck!

Wow, are you kidding me? First of all, NEVER do a fill without fluro. They can't see what their doing and could puncture the tubing, not to mention they have to feel around blindly and cause you more pain and stress. I don't care what anyone says about the radiation from the machine, it's just an x-ray, you get your boobs smashed and x-rayed every year, you'd get an x-ray if it was a broken leg, or for anything else like that, and if they are not doing your fills under fluro, you need to seriously rethink your doctor. Secondly, why are you getting a fill while you are still swollen? Fills should not be done until you are healed, you'll just be causing more irritation around the band and the port, and pain for yourself. Listen to your body and yourself, not your doctor so much. They don't know everything, and that they are so eager to do fills while you are still swollen and healing also makes me concerned about your doctor's policies. While you are healing, you should only be worried about healing and getting enough nutrition, the weight will come off anyway, but don't worry about losing until you are healed and feeling better.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and encouragement. I went to True Results so it is not like a normal doctor's office. My surgeon doesn't do fills, they are done by a nurse practitioner. She did have me raise my hands above my head and then act like I was doing a sit up so I know it couldn't be that she couldn't find my port...I don't know maybe it was a fluke. All of my fills for the next year were included since I was cash pay so I am sort of stuck going there - anyway, hopefully next one will be uneventful and I will remember to ask my questions.

I had a fill like that and it left me pretty upset too. Is there another doctor or PA in your office who can do fills? I found mine and we've never had a problem. You can ask for more aggressive fills. My advice is to schedule fill for Mon or Tues just in case you get overfilled and need an emergency unfill over the next few days.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
