Confused On How To Lose

Recommended Posts

I got the Lapband in early December 2011. I lost 5 pounds the first week on the liquid diet. Once I moved to soft foods, I stopped losing. It's now almost March and I have yo-yoed back and forth with those 5 pounds. I've had two fills. The first didn't make a difference, I could eat as much as I was hungry for. The second fill is tighter and I throw-up if I eat too fast but I'm still so hungry. I track food daily on myfitnesspal.com and I exercise 6 days a week. I see on my food tracking that I just eat too many calories (although they are mostly good, whole food calories). When I limit my calories for more than four days, I get too exhausted to exercise and get so overwrought, I eat the wrong foods. This was my problem before the lapband, too (although then I could diet for longer stretch of time).

I keep reading about all these people who have lost so much weight with the lapband. Has anyone struggled at the beginning like I have and then gone on to lose a lot of weight? Or, am I just part of that 5% that don't lose with the lapband? Has anyone joined Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, or Weight Watchers to support the lapband? Any advice at all would be helpful. Thanks!

I struggled in the beginning and didn't lose fast either. But I stuck it out and did what I knew I had to do. My PA told me I may be the few % that the band doesn't control hunger....lucky me! I got a fill today and hoping for the best.

Weightloss surgery or not, if you eat too many calories ya ain't gonna lose weight! How many calories are you eating a day? I try and keep mine to 1000-1300 a day.

I've read several that have struggled in the beginning. I'm not banded yet but it sounds to me like you're not getting enough Protein. I would also try to find a support group for bandsters if you have one near you, I've been told that makes a ton of difference too. Hope things get bettter for you....good luck!

Thank you for your replies. I have my daily calorie goal set for 1200 calories on myfitness pal. I've managed to stay right at that level for the last three days. I know that in another two days I'll lose my mind because I feel so hungry.

My Protein is usually pretty high because I do a lot of exercise. I got 100 grams today. I eat grilled chicken, egg beaters, chobani yogurt, and muscle milk light.

I also drink a lot of Water. I do have good habits but I'm more like a person without a lapband. Biologically, my body is doing everything it can to maintain this weight and I thought the lapband would give me at least some help but it's like nothing is there, just something that makes me throw up and not let me eat certain foods anymore.

I'm still confused why it's not working for me.

You shouldn't be throwing up?? Maybe it's time to check in with your doctor.

Everyone throws up some until they find out what foods to avoid. The food I could eat before fill changed after fill and it takes time to eliminate some foods from diet. You don't just bring food bad up because of over tight band I can chew a bite of lettuce until its juice and it's coming back up but I can eat a slice of pizza no problem? Weird but that's the band and everyone is different.

It sounds like u still need more fill, u shouldnt be really hungry all the time. Just because u throw up when u eat too fast it doesnt mean u are at the restriction you need. I know i need a fill when i get hungry in between meals but i still can get stuck if i eat to fast, dont chew enough etc. I am one of those people that if i am hungry i definitely eat too fast and then i get stuck so I have Soup before my main meal just a ww Tomato Soup ( 70 cals) this goes half way to making me feel satisfied so i dont eat too fast for my main meal. The last thing u should do is turn to food just because u feel tired, you would be far better to have a day of rest and not get 'overwrought and eat the wrong foods' .

Try eating 5 small meals a day instead of 3 or if u are eating 5 meals a day then change to 3. I know if i eat more than around 1000 calories a day i just dont lose weight. Its a pain having to count calories all the time but i am not one of those that could just eat small meals of normal type food and lose weight. Try lowing your carb intake, if you eat too many it can trigger feelings of hunger ...

I would consider going to see a psychologist or food counsellor as if some of your hunger is mind based the band wont really help you on that.

JUst dont give up and try different things, theres a thread on this forum for people following Weight Watchers it might be something like that will help you, change your exercise routine, do small changes whilst you sort out your hunger issues and maybe try another small fill.

Most of us became overweight because we just didnt like or couldnt live with the feelings of being hungry, it might be u have to learn to live with those feelings for a while yet, after all none of us will starve to death.

You havent been banded very long so you are probably still in 'bandster hell', give it time and just tweak what you are doing for now.

Yesterday i literally felt like i was hungry all day, i dont have any food in the house which will put on weight, i found myself 'grazing' but on food that i know wont put on weight. 0% greek yoghurt, sugar free Jello, suagr free sweets, tea and coffee all helped me in between meals. I know i will need another fill soon even tho i still get stuck sometimes.

I would definitely look to getting another fill soon as it really is too early to say that its not working for you, and talking with the doctor may help sort out what is going on for you.. good luck :)

Thank you! I like your Soup idea. I am so hungry when I start to eat but having a little lo-cal soup to start might slow me down a bit. I was just afraid of getting into the slider-food mode if I went with soup. I also like your idea of eating 5 small meals, rather than 3. I've been really trying for 3 because my doc told me to do that, but I really start going crazy around the 3rd or 4th hour without food. I found some sugar-free popsicles in the fridge at work and have been having one at the end of my day on my commute and that seems to help a bit too.

To everyone who has commented so far - thank you! You all have had very helpful tips that I can start putting into practice.

I am sure you will find the Soup helpful, i got the idea from when i used to eat out i would never have soup as a starter because it fills me up and i wouldnt eat my meal .. I have eaten soup before my main meal every day since being banded and i love it .. My partner lost 80lbs by eating soup before his meals too as he would not be satisfied with smaller meals either and he wasnt even banded ... sometimes we just have to go with what works and not what is standard :)

Cazzy - you summed me up! I am maybe going to have a mini fill tomorrow as I am hungry every 1.5 hours.

Cheers,

Kristi

Hello have you checked whether you may be anemic? I am the same as you and discovered my dizziness was a symptom of a deficiency

Sarz,

Wouldn't taking Iron pills prevent anemia? I know that is the treatment anyway. It's just a blood test, right? I was going to get my blood tested again once I lost 20 or 30 pounds but since that hasn't happened, I'm delaying it.

AXA, true Iron is the remedy for anemia its just a supplement to take with caution thats all and better to know the cause of your dizziness.. Anemia was what was causing mine, I would gorge myself on sweet things as a result of my dizziness. Wish all great health

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
