I'm a self pay too and I am on a pre-op diet. My sister is having the gastric sleeve surgery, self pay, and she is supposed to follow the South Beach Diet for 2 weeks before surgery. Reading thru all these entries it's funny how some doctors require liquids only, some allow food, some think all liquids is too restrictive. Good luck with your diet and surgery!

I might be a March Bandster! I have an EGD on March 6th. If I have hernia then my insurance will pay for almost half of the procedure making it possible for me to afford the rest. If I don't have a hernia...well let's not think negative thoughts!!! I think this is the first time that I am crossing my fingers for a minor health issue...lol

Some surgeons do not require pre-op diets. Unlike most who seem to have to do a liquid diet, I am only required to do a low-fat diet. I have been using Protein Shakes and will go completely liquid the week prior to surgery to get some more of that weight off :)

Thank you Stephanie that was very helpful

Hey Judy. Was on lunch when I wrote at work. Yes it's been tuff but getting easier 1 whole week on the pre op diet now. My surge on the 8/3 so another week yet. And yes was drinking vegemite in hot Water was so hungry lol. Sounds absolutely Devine where u live. I imagine it's just gorgeous. I've been in this process since nov last yr. As I'm getting wary release of funds from my super it's been a long drawn out process let me tell u. Still doin last minute sorting a wk before surg. I had high bmi so I suppose was not so hard in thar way just getting the money was hard lol. I hope all goes well with ur visit to ur surgeon. Sounds great if he has his own clinic. Dr dr is reza Adib. Lovely man. Well u take care. Kim

you too Kim... and good luck with your week's dieting.... i wonder if i have to diet at all?? that, plus painful shoulder, slippage of band and no weight loss are on my mind all the time now. lol. i guess everyone goes through it .

So... your super is funding the surgery?? it sounds like youve had quite a battle getting to this point... is that right?? weve been retired for so long now that super wasnt compulsary when Ray was working.

i hope that you have a good day at work. what is your job??

hello Kim ' date=' its just so good to see another aussie on here. although i must say its been a brilliant forum for me so far. i guess when it comes down to issues like we have, countries are all the same.... and so are the people. its good to meet you.

o.k..so you are near Brisbane?? i love that city. ive been through it a couple of times, we have a family member who lives in Eleanora which is near Coolangatta airport. Ray and i often go to Coolangatta for holidays.

So you are in hospital in the morning? is that right? im assuming that you are on computer now.. we are on practically the same time zone. we have an hour ahead of you though, but its not much.

Has it been hard for you leading up to your surgery then?? boy oh boy... some drs from what ive read here have put their patients on strict diets. i dont know how i would manage that without a band. who is your dr?? my dr will be Dr Wilkinson.

WAs it hard for you to get the referral?/ im about 4 stone overweight... my height is 5ft 5in. If it wasnt for my arthritis ,which is crippling me in my feet, hips and knees after many surgeries, i dont think the referring dr would have given me a referral, she didnt say anything but im thinking my BMI is only 30.... its the chronic condition of my joints that got me through. im hoping that it wont take all that long for me to lose the weight... but then i dont know really.

I see dr wilkinson next wed... the 7th. i held out with the appointment because we had a family visitor staying and it was too difficult for me to get to the dr. WE live right down south in TAsmania.

..nearly the furthest point you can find on the map. lol. its; a beautiful place, we live on the Water, looking out to the sea towards the east. Its a small town with not many amenities and we have to travel on a not so good road to Hobart to see the specialist etc etc. so, its a biggie for us. we dont like being on the road much.

anyway, im so glad i found this forum. ive made so many notes... ive got plenty of questions for the dr when i see him next week. l i hate going and not being prepared., How long did you have to wait until they got you into surgery??

wilky has his own lapband clinic. i dont know what sort of waiting list he has... i hope its not long.

Which specialist do you have?? are you going to a clinic or into a hospital?/ what time are you booked in for?? If you like i can email you privately. if you want to email me privately my email addy is with my details... you can see it there.l

its so good to see you on here..... keep posting. im waiting with bated breath to see how you get on.

Did i see you say that you had to have vegemite in hot water?? i love that. did it help you?? it sounds like you went through some tough days leading up to surgery. i certainly will talk to a dietician. thats for sure. Did you get a chance to do that??

i dont know the protocol yet. i will let you know. o.k. ... now ive written a book id better get off here...

'bye for now Kim... all the best for tomorrow.. .which is friday. are you in only for the day?? let us know.... sending you big hugs now. judy[/quote']

Hey Judy sounds beautiful where you live.

I had a huge bmi so that helped with getting a referral and the dr has been wonderful. So far so good. Have lost 6.5kgs on the pre op diet so far does not surprise me it's a killer yea vegemite water was happening las time I was on it. My approval hadn't made it for for scheduled op. So had to do again arrgghhh was hard the second time.

Ur Drs clinic sounds amazing. I hope this makes all the difference for your poor legs.

My dr is reza Adib my friend went through him also which is great so I have plenty tips from he was funny we ran into each other at his office I had no clue about her at all.

My surgery is on the 8/3 at 1 or 2pm I think funny my friend has appt with him just before my surgery lol. So I'm hoping she can come say hi to me before it happens.

Well my email is frangipani@live.com.au please keep me updated how u going Kim

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
