Anynoe Have Bcbs Federal?

Recommended Posts

I have BCBS Federal. While I've never had a problem with them ... I've never needed surgery authorization though them. I'm just wondering if anyone has them, and what the experience was with the authorization and hospital/Anesthesia costs, etc.

Thanks so much.

I have BCBS Federal and was just banded 12/23/11. I started the process back in June and had to do 4 months monitored weight loss program, 2 nutrition consultations, 2 year history of obesity (one chart note from PCP for the previous 2 yrs with a BMI of >35, and a letter from PCP stating I had not smoked in 6 months or been treated for substance abuse in a year. Those were the insurance requirements......I also had to do EKG, a lung function test, blood work, a sleep study, and have a letter from my endocrinologist and adjustment of my insulin pump for surgery. BCBS took about 30 days to approve. I haven't seen any explanation of benefits yet...so I can't really speak for the hospita/anesthesia costs.

Good Luck.

OMG that sounds like a LOT!!!!!! They told me I needed 3 months of monitored diet history. They said nothing about an EKG or letter from the doc about me not smoking. No sleep study or anything else. SHEESH. Thanks for the information

i have BCBS fed 2! i had a 3 mnth pre approval process. i had to see the surgeon and a nutritionist montlhy x 3 mnths, had to see a psychtriatrist once. i had to get recommendation letter from my primary care doctor. this has kept me very busy over the last few months. after getting all this done, it took BCBS about 4 weeks to approve my surgery (some of that time was due to holidays im sure). then i had to get a stress test and pulmonary function test and chest xray per the surgeon to be cleared for surgery. just look at it as hoops to jump through but it will be worth it. some insurances require 6 mnth pre-approval so i was just glad to only have 3mnths! good luck!teeth_smile.gif

I have BCBS Fed. I had to have 3 months doctor supervised diet, a psych consult and see a nutrisionist. My information was sent to BCBS on Jan 25, it was reviewed by the nurse at BCBS on Jan 31 and I was approved on Feb 2! I also had to provide documentation of being over weight and I dont have a PCP so my Ob-gyn sent in the sheet from my chart that showed my previous weight. It was fairly simple. If you have any specific questions feel free to inbox me or email me at sherrellechols@gmail.com. Hope this helps.

I had BCBS Fed when I had my surgery. I was required to have 3 months of supervised dieting. I submitted my former PCP's office notes from when I was on phentermine two years before and they accepted them. I also had to have a psych consult.

My surgeon submitted my paperwork to BCBS and I was approved three business days later.

WOW! It looks like BCBS Fed covers all ranges, 3 days to 4 weeks for approval.

Well my surgeon's office is "swamped" with insurance authorization requests to send out. My appt was Jan 24 and they havent sent my stuff to BCBS yet so .... I'm waiting for them to catch up. I guess I'll call at the end of next week and hope to know something from BCBS Fed sometime in March or earlier.

I have Federal BCBS. I had to have 3 months of nutritional counseling, proof of 1 year attempted weight loss, diagnosis of morbid obesity for 2 years prior to surgery and a mental health exam. So far I have had 2 appts with the nutritionist and I have lost 5 lbs following her diet. I have one more appt with her on 3/12/12. The psychiatrist I seen for the mental health exam spreads it out over two appts. My final appt with her is 3/12/12 as well. As soon as the nutritonist and psychiatrist submit their documentation to my surgeon they will then submit it to BCBS. Fingers crossed that it is approved quickly! Lisa, from my surgeons office, says that based on documentation from my PCP that everything looks good and she doesn't forsee any problems with approval. I also submitted a letter from my personal trainer. I'm ready to get this show on the road! However, I am dreading the 10 day liquid pre-op diet... BCBS has up to 30 days to review but it sure would be wonderful if they get it done in a week or less...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
