Extra Skin And Depression

Recommended Posts

@ 54shirley that's a great idea to donate skin to the burn unit. Would be nice if that was possible. Can you imagine how much skin we could donate! I just might look into that.

Actually it's True !

The Surgeon explained, and showed me allot of kids that were burned, and in need of skin grafting. The problem is,,, when they are 3/4 burned over the body, they have no place to go to get the skin. So they get it and keep it alive, actually let it grow untill it's needed again.

No one thinks about donating their skin. Vital Organs, well yeagh, but not the skin. So it is possible to go down to a Childrens Hospital Burn Unit, and talk to the Head Surgeon. Tell him what you would be willing to offer, and ask him would he do the surgery, by donating his time. The worst is NO!

I would contact a few places, and when they see what they will be getting,,, they might say Yes ! It can't hurt..

I have a 4hr. Drive to go down to Detroit, and even if the Dr. is Retired. I am going to talk to the new head man, and explain what I have to offer, and maybe they will be interested. Fingers are crossed on this one.

I have a long way to get to my goal, but I'm going to keep this in mind. It sure can't hurt.

I might even check out The U of M. and see what they say.

After all the surgeon made me the offer, so, there must be something there that they want, and I will have enough to help allot of people.

I have lost 110 lbs and have a large amount of skin sagging from my abdomen area. I consulted a plastic surgeon over a year ago and the consensus is that the only way to get rid of it is with a Tummy Tuck. When I visited the plastic surgeon I was 223 lbs. Now I weigh 165. The more I lose the more it sags. I may have a tummy tuck within the next two years or may decide to forego it. In the interim ... I find joy in knowing that I've lost 110 lbs and that I am healthier. teeth_smile.gif

I would definitely donate if able. My DH had a heart transplant 7 yrs ago. Organ donation is a subject I truly believe in.

Now let me preface this by saying I'm glad I had my body lift and my BA, coz they did make a difference in the way I perceive myself. But I just thought I'd add that when I was big, I focussed on my weight, when I lost it, I focussed on my excess skin, when I got rid of that, I focussed on my lost boobs, and when I got a BA, I started focussing on my thighs, and my teeth, and my... well you get the picture.

I then realised that it's human nature to always pick out the worse things in yourself and think that's what makes you 'you'. I remember being overweight and thinking if I got to 160lbs I would feel perfect. But it doesn't happen that way. You always find something wrong with yourself. You're never happy.

But you have to decide if that rules your life or not. I exchanged excess skin for significant scarring. I remember telling a good friend after my body lift that I didn't know whether trading excess skin was worth looking like Frankenstein in hindsight, and she said, do you realise that no one cares about that but you? And she was right. No one did.

Well said lellow, I want to get rid of the excess tummy skin because I have fought a fungus/rash for more than ten years. I am afraid even after I lose the excess weight I will still have the same problem.

To date I have lost 157 lbs. I am 50lbs from goal.... and my legs are sagging pretty badly since thats where I carried so much weight. I am going try to get motivated to exercise and get them toned up since I dont have the time nor really have the desire to get the skin removed. My arms sag too... maybe the exercise will help there. My boobs however are beyond help without surgery...I hadnt thought that I would have them altered but its actually affecting my personal life . My hubby doesnt mind.... but I do...in a big way .... and its getting in the way of me enjoying that aspect of my life. So after I hit goal I plan on looking into that....

You have the love and support from your significant other...that is priceless! I plain don't stand in front of a mirror naked...not a good idea...and totally unnecessary. Just don't do it! Listen to him. I know that I would much rather have some extra skin than I would be dead at a young age! I did this for my health, I did not want to get diabetes or any other obesity related medical issue! You are doing great and for god sake stay away from the mirror naked! lol Once again a lucky girl to have the support of him!!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
