HORRIBLE GAS PAINS

Recommended Posts

Hello All, I was just banded on Friday Oct 28 and it is now 4 days later and I am STILL having horrible gas pains. I thought I would try and go back to work today but only made it through half of the day because I feel like the gas pains are getting worse. So my question to all of you is, Do you know of any secrets that might get rid of the gas and is it constant or will it go away? because there is no way i can live forever like this. PLEASE HELP! because the walking and Gas X is not helping!

My fourth day after surgery 10/29 was what I call Gassy Saturday. It was rough, I was expelling gas all day, my poor wife suffered. I think the dog and cat went into hiding. I was taking GAS-X strips and had the heating pad on my shoulder switched on high when I was in the recliner. The shoulder pain is wicked, I had almost no pain from the surgery. By bedtime I was worn down, wife said I looked like a hunchback. Saturday was the first time I took a full dose of my prescribed pain medicine so I could sleep.

By some miracle the shoulder pain and other gas went away Sunday. Both returned Monday but at a lesser degree. So far this has been the only rough patch on my new lap band journey. Hope we all say goodbye to the shoulder pain sooner than later. Someone said doing arm circles helps but the heating pad was the best physical relief for me. Last resort is liquid tylenol or your pain medicine.

It will eventually go away and you will not live with it forever, although while you are enduring it, that doesn't mean a lot. The heating pad, the pain meds, gas X and walking were what helped the most for me and after about a week or so the most of it was gone. It did linger for me for a bit, but only bothering me minimally. Just remember, it WILL pass and you will get better.

I was banded the same day. I tried walking, I tried gas strips and NOTHING helped. The only thing that helped me was bending over slightly in a hot shower and it helped me pass the gas. I still hurt though. It sucks.

I was banded on the 12th and at my first post op visit with the surgeon 9 days later, I was still in a ton of shoulder pain. He said it would go away. Well, it lasted another 5 days and then it gradually went away. So he was right. And interestingly, I was passing tons of gas for several days before the pain resolved. I took about 2 of my percocettes a day until it was gone. So, hang in there It does go away. Gas x did nothing for me, but the heating pad was comforting. Good luck!!

I was banded on the same day. I wish I had a magic trick for clearing out the gas.

Whenever these posts are made, there seems to be some confusion about what gas pains are.

There are 2 types of gas pains.

One is when you get excessive gas in your digestive system. Stomach, intestines. Feeling pain, bloated, cannot burp, etc.

Gas-x will help as other remedies to help you pass this gas.

The other is from the surgical procedure itself where they pump air into your abdominal cavity to bloat your skin / fat layers away from your organs so the surgeon has more room to work. This gas / air is NOT in your digestive system, but outside it.

The air is removed as one of the final steps, but sometime small bubbles are trapped. It slowly rises under your ribs / sternum and eventually accumulates in your left shoulder.

There is NOTHING that will get rid of this trapped air except time. Heating pads may make you feel better temporarily.

Gas-X or anything similar does not, and can not even touch this gas.

This is common for all people with any abdominal surgeries. They only thing hospitals prescribe is for the patient to get up and get walking as soon as possible. Won't cure the pain, but will speed up the process.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
