Have to postpone surgery :(

Recommended Posts

My bloodwork came back and my thyroid is totally out of whack.

I have been on the same dosage of thyroxine for 25 years with yearly blood tests. The meds keep my thyroid normal.

Now my numbers are almost off the scale. Dr. thought I had stopped taking my meds but I have been taking them faithfully every morning.

So, now I have to postpone my surgery date for a couple of months. The date was October 21. If all goes well with the increased dosage of thyroxine, I should be able to have my surgery at the end of November.

Lynn

I'm sorry you have to wait that must be so frustrating.

I am also on thyroid medication, and I was wondering if maybe there was a change in the medicine in terms of going from brand name to generic? I only ask because my regular doctor said that she absolutely refuses to approve generic thyroid meds for her patients. She will okay generics for any other kind of drug, but she feels that with thyroid the dosage has to be exactly perfect and that with generics she has seen patients have trouble. Just a thought.

I hope everything gets straightened out for you soon and you can move on to surgery!

Good luck!

Hi,

I have had the same generic brand for 12 years and it is only this year that the test showed my thyroid was acting up.

The only thing I can think of that I changed in the past few months is that I started taking PGX (a Fiber pill) that is supposed to expand in your stomach and make you feel full. I followed the instructions on the bottle where it says take PGX at least an hour after any medications to give the meds time to be absorbed.

I wonder because my metabolism is so slow that the PGX didnt allow the meds to absorb into my system. Just a thought but I cant think of anything else that I have changed.

My thyroid levels were suddenly out of whack and my PCP sent me to see an endocrinologist. He increased the dose very slightly and changed the way I take the medication.

He instructed me to set two alarms in the morning. One hour before I have to get up, the first alarm rings and I take my levothyroxine with a sip of Water. My real alarm rings an hour later and by the time I shower, brush my teeth and feed the cats, the thyroid med has had nearly two hours to be completely absorbed before I have coffee and Breakfast.

Hi Dulci,

My dr also told me to change the way I take my levothyroxine. I have to take it by itself as well and then wait an hour to eat.

Sure hope it is working because I am very anxious to get this surgery done.

Did you lose any weight with the increased dose of meds?

Lynn

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
