How long should I wait till I drink

Recommended Posts

How long do you wait to drink before or after you eat? Trying to see what everybody is doing! New to this and trying to get it all down! Thanks :)

[it seems all doctors recommend different times, but most common is 30-meal-30. Stop drinking 30 minutes before your meal, and don't drink for 30 minutes after your meal.

My doctor's office said I could take tiny sips with my meal if needed.

Some people's dr. say they can drink right up until the first bite, and some doctors say wait 45-60 minutes after.

Good luck!

I drink up until O eat and then usually about an hour afterwards or I vomit. I can tell when the food is down, depending on what it is is how long I have to wait.

I never really followed this rule because I really didn't think there was too much of a point to the 30-meal-30 rule. I am going to drink when I'm thirsty, right? I have had my band for about a year now and I am pretty tight, and have been with a fill I have had for about 4 months now.

Honestly my advice is that you can never get too many liquids so drink as much as you can. I have days when it is impossible for me to hardly swallow my own spit, so I drink whenever I can, whether its 30 minutes before or after I attempt to eat. While I am eating and I feel like something is stuck, I can't drink of course until it goes down so sometimes that can take more or less than 30 minutes. I also will gauge whether or not something is stuck by taking a sip of Water (or whatever I am drinking) and feeling it go down.

I don't think this is a major rule to worry about too much...The only way drinking has ever effected my weight loss is because I don't drink enough most of the time.

Sometimes I will take small sips when I eat, but it comes at the risk of causing a stuck episode for me. I was hardcore against stopping drinking with my meals, and I still have something sitting there--but it generally sits there until I am done eating and am sure the food is settled. Then I will drink it. It's usually just a few minutes after my last bite before I can drink with confidence.

I have experimented with waiting for 30 minutes after a meal to see if it makes a difference for me as to when I get hungry again. For me, no it doesn't.

I drink up until I start eating and then wait an hour after. I find that my lower calorie/fat food choices tend to be less salty and I don't really miss not drinking while I eat.

HmDiiva - you're way too tight, you really should get a small unfill. Being too tight can cause a lot of problems including band slippage and band erosion.

Cocoabean - I'm similiar to you. When I was first banded I used to drink with meals because I didn't have a problem doing it. But now, drinking with a meal is a recipe for stuckage. So I may take super tiny little sips (maybe 3-4 drops of fluid) but never a gulp while eating. And usually for about 30 minutes after I have no desire to drink Fluid.

Pink8671: I find that the closer you get to the green zone, the less you'll want or be able to drink during meals. It's a good idea not to drink during meals and to help that, someone on the board told me a great idea. Fill up a glass with some ice when you start your meal, throughout the meal you're only allowed to drink what's melted. That gives you just enough to whet your palette but keeps you from drinking a whole glass of something.

About 20-30 minutes after a meal, then go ahead and start drinking normally again. Aim for 8-10 oz per hour.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
