Had my Lap Band surgery yesterday

Recommended Posts

I got out of the hospital this morning, and have slept most of the day at home. Yeah! No one kept waking me up to check my vitals or give me more shots.

I am sore from the incisions including the one for the hernia the doctor found, but I don't seem to be experiencing bad gas pains that others do. I did do laps around the ward yesterday afternoon, so that may have helped.

I am taking the pain meds for the incisions, and they make me tired and my eyes blurred. Maybe in the next day or 2 I hopel be able to discontinue them.

My surgery was very quick. I checked in by 7am an out of surgery by 11. By 1 I was up in my room, but they did not do the swallow test until almost 4. After that I was to finally have a sip of Water. My mouth was dry as a dessert because this was my first sip since the night before. My roommate had checked in at 10 for a noon surgery, but they did operate on her until 5 so she just lay on a stretcher waiting all day. Not sure what happened there, but she finally arrived in the room at about 9. They had already given her her swallow test, so he proceeded to wolf down the stuff on her dinner tray and got a lecture about eating too fast. She sounded as if she was in a great deal more discomfort than me but she left at the same time this morning.

Hang in there the gas pains may come and go, but by exercising you will eliminate them completely

I had my surgery yesterday as well and I did have some pain in the upper stomach/chest area, but I got up and started walking even before I left recovery. It helped a lot. I did so well, the doctor let me go home the same day of surgery. I was very happy to be able sleep in my own bed. I am still very sore this morning and I am really curious about how I will do when I start drinking the shakes this morning. Actually I am drinking the first one right now. So far so good. I think it will get better each day. Yesterday when I got home I took some of the pain med that the doctor prescribed but so far today i havent taken one yet. I really dont want to sleep the whole day away and they knock me out.

Every day will get easier. Do not drink from a straw, that will make the gas worse. I learned that the hard way. I took pain Meda for a couple of days. Listen to the doctor instructions and do not eat regular food until you are supposed to.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
