Newly Banded / 6/14 / Seeking HELP AND ADVICE

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I came here to look for some support as I am struggling and scared :( . I was banded 6/14 my band has remained empty until my 1st fill on 7/11. My incesions have completly healed over, gas pains are gone and I feel great, expect for the CONSTANT HUNGER. I am suppose to be on liquids and Protein shakes until my 1st fill but I have disappointed myself and had solid food....:(. This evening I had scrmbled egss, cream of wheat, 1 twix candy bar and french fries, and I think I had so much because it all went down without any problems.

Now I am worried that I have made a mistake and possibly runied my lapband. I am not looking to be judged because no one is perfect and everyone has eaten something they shouldn't have at some point. I am looking for anyone is willing to offer any ADVICE and SUPPORT.

Should I be worried that my lapband is ruined before my first fill? Could my lapband have already slipped?

Please Help.....

What kind of help do you want? Talk with your doctor and give him accurate information so he can determine what the best approach is to deal with this issue. No Bandster ever died of 'constant hunger'. Mostly 'constant over eating' is what gave people such as myself the kinds of problems that come with Morbid Obesity. Recovery from a decades long self inflicted over eating habit has required continued daily efforts on my part, which mean I have to do my part of the dance. The result is worth it, and nothing tastes as good as better health. Good luck.

Hi and relax your band has not slipped, and I go through the same thing you are and I had a fill already. I need to eat small amounts of food many x a day and I have not lost anything, so be careful. I go back in July I am hoping I get filled alot.

Hang in there and we will do this together.

I think you will be fine! I have never heard of cream of wheat or eggs slipping a band.

I know it's hard but try to stick to your doctor's order whatever they may be. I think I was already on eggs and cream of wheat by week 4 though. Wish you well!

* EDIT: I thought you was on week 4. Well I was eating thinned out cream of wheat on week 2 however.

I'm sure you haven't slipped your band but you do need to go back to following your doctor's instructions. When your band was placed, it was sutured in place and the reason you are on liquids is to allow time for the band to "seat" well in place...when you eat solid food, your stomach churns in order to digest it which can possibly increase the possibility of band slippage in the future. You might want to contact your bariatric support team to see if they have any suggestions...I will say that having to be on liquids until your first fill is a bit aggressive but there is a reason your doctor has given you the instructions and without prior approval I would suggest you follow them.

Hi, it has been two years since I had it done, I have lost over 50lbs, wanted to be lower, but, I will get there, I am exercising now, I didn't for the longest time. food went down easy for me too at first, before my first fill. I thought, oh boy, piece of cake, but I still ate cautiously, was afraid of food getting stuck! Believe me, your lapband has not slipped, I thought mine might have slipped till I had it checked in May, '11, because I was having a hard time of food getting stuck, so I would have to throw it up, but its the easiest way of getting rid of the pain. I had Fluid taken out in May, I wanted to eat somewhat 'normally', I don't overeat, but, I don't throw up either. You will be fine, just stick with your 'good' eating, everyone does mess up sometimes! And take your Vitamins, I had blood tests done in May, and I was under vitamized, if thats a word. Good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
