2wk or Long Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I was told today by my nutrionist that works side by side with the dr that I might have to be on a longer pre-op liquid diet becuase I have a high bmi...

Last time he said that my diet would only be 2 weeks, but now shes saying something different...

I have to check back with him at my next apointment...

anybody do the pre-op diet for longer then 2 weeks, How the hell am I only suppose to drink liquid for 1 month straight...

anybody else hear of Optifast?

I used Optifast for my pre-op diet. It surprisingly doesn't taste too bad. I blended my shakes with ice so they were a little more satisfying. I only had to do it for two weeks, but the first 3 or 4 days were the worst and after that it got a lot better. I know of other people that went to my clinic with a higher BMI than me that had to do it for 3 or 4 weeks. I'm sure it wont be easy but you can do it! It is so worth it!

As stated above, it does get easier after the first few days. It's really important to stick to the preop diet- it's meant to shrink your liver. If your liver is too large they don't have enough room to work. It will result in you not getting banded. Of course you don't want that to happen. You can do it!

I agree with vlp1968 about the liver. My pre-op was suppose to be14 days bu was actually 12 days because they scheduled the surgery sooner. I'm surprised they want you to do liquids for a month. They may put you on protien diet first then put you on liquids for the last two weeks. Good luck! No matter what it is worth it. Just talk yourself thru it everyday and know that it is only temporary.

I did liquids for two weeks on my own-just to make sure I could do it before I paid for this sirgery! I was able to do it and have gone straight into the two weeks before surgwry. My surgery will be in ten days so I've been on liquids for 18 days. It really hasn't been that bad, just a little depressing that I've only lost 8 lbs. If you think about it you will then be on liquids for another 2-3 weeks after surgery....so get ready. Yikes! Good luck to you.

My pre-op diet was a month, but I only had to have liquids only for the last week. I wasn't given a set time so much as I was told to lose 20 pounds and to stick to a 1200 calorie or less diet / day.

I started the liver reduction diet on January 5, 2011 and was banded on May 17. LONG pre op diet lol. But I survived it ;)

i did the Optifast for 2 weeks (just had surgery on the 15th) it went much better than i thought it would - i was really worried that it would taste awful and i would be starving - but neither was true - i had shakes, Soup and bars - at first i just drank the shakes straight up or over ice - then i tried mixing with about 1/4 cup strong coffee and some sugar free caramel Syrup - when mixed with the vanilla shake it tasted just like a cold caramel machiatto from Starbucks - unfortunately my Dr ran out of vanilla so i only had a few of these - coffee with choco shake was good also - i didn't like the strawberry so much but it was tolerable - when you make the soup use a wisk and it comes out smooth and creamy - i couldn't get the lumps out with just the spoon - the first 2-3 days i felt light headed - but after that i felt great - never hungry, lots of energy ... i wondered if i could just do that to lose weight - but i couldn't sustain the diet for 6-8 months - it did give me instant diarhea esp in the morning - which caused my arse to burn - vasaline worked the best on that - i lost 14 pounds in the 2 weeks. One book i read talked about "changing our relationship with food" - i think this is a good start on that - it really helped me get my head in the game - i even went out to eat with friends and just took my shake - it was very liberating to be in control again !!! Good luck

That sounds amazingly good. An iced caramel machiatto happens to be my favorite Starbucks Beverage.... om nom nom.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
